If I worked at a research company over the summer, do I need to get a letter from my boss at that company to add it to the Commonapp so they don't think I'm BSing? If so, where would I put it? (do i make copies of it and mail it to each school?)

The Commonapp lets you only allow a certain number of ec's. Since I have alot that I want to add (different leadership positions, alot of volunteering, different work places etc.) where do I the rest? Do i make an individual resume on word and attach it somewhere?

Please all advice is needed!
If you can help me individually PLEASE private message me! :)

Usually colleges will believe you, they don’t spend a copious amount of time reviewing your application, but you can have it just in case.

You’re supposed to enter only the most significant ECs you have. Not every volunteer opportunity or club. You may use all 10 spaces, but if you need extra room, you may attach a resume (maximum 1~2 pgs) on the additional information on the common app (writing section).

agree with the poster above me, its unnecessary- they’ll contact you if they need you to verify anything

you can add it in additional information, but it’s better to cut it down to your 10 most meaningful activities- unless the things that can’t be included are extraordinary, listing them could hurt you as adcoms could get pis*y for thinking you’re wasting their time by listing ec’s that don’t matter.

Here are my EC’s: Which 10 looks best for colleges?

Vice President National Honor Society (11-12)

English Honor Society (12)

Temple – Sunday School teacher (9-12)

Carl Sagan (9-12) Preliminary round finalists of a prestigous citywide science fair

Hospital Internship @North Shore LIJ (12)

Red Cross Club (11) member

Key Club (10-12) member

Environmental Club (11) member

Created a school recycling program

Volunteered to clean local pond

Internship at Labcorp/North Shore LIJ(Science Lab) (Summer 11)

President of Indian Club (10-11)

Chief Editor of Yearbook Committee (12)

Work Experience: Lakeview Tutoring Services Founder + CEO (10-Present)

SING (High school musical (each grade competes with the other grades)) Co-Director

President of Chess Club (9-10)

Founder & President of Science Honors Society (12)

Just list the 10 numbers i should include. Thanks alot!

oh shoot, i forgot
19. Junior secretary (Student council) (11)

also the numbers in the parenthesis is the grade i participated in the activity, if it wasn’t clear :p

Ones that show your leadership abilities, a significant accomplishment, or/and an EC that were the most meaningful to you are the best ones to put on the list/resume.

I narrowed it down to:
1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19.

I think I have a lot of leadership positions, what if all of my 10 are leadership positions? Wouldn’t schools want to know what I did outside of school (such as volunteering)?

You can mention those on your resume, but remember, you have to keep your resume short or else admissions might get p*ssed off because it’s too long.

What do you mean? I’m filling out all of my schools via commonapp. They only give 10 maximum.

I mean that, if you choose to attach a resume to show all your other activities or highlight the most important ones by bullet points through additional information, it should be short.

I am going to stick with the 10 common app spots. Can you help me on how to phrase these ec’s?

There’s quite the limited space for EC’s on the common app, so phrase as you see fit. Just put a plain title because that’s what it’s called. The elaboration is barely enough to fit 2 sentences, that’s why attaching a resume for additional information is a good idea, unless you plan to use additional information for something else. For the writing section, you may elaborate on one EC in ~150 words.
