Commons dorms and closet space, refrig

S applied for dorms in the commons. If he gets his request, can anyone tell us if there is any space in the closet for putting a small chest with 3-4 drawers? I've seen some made of heavy fabric that you can hang in the closet but had heard that the closets in Mosher are really small. Also, you can bring own small refrig and microwave? Is there room in the commons suites for each person in a room to have those things?
Another parent said he thought the small refrig comes with the room, but that isn't the case?
How were the laundry facilities in the commons dorms?

laundry is just fine. The machines are pretty good I thought. They have 4 washers and 4 dryers per floor. Can be kind of hard to get a machine at times.

Usually, roommates share the fridge and microwave. There really is no reason to have your own. It all fits just fine with one minifridge and a microwave.

The closets are really small so I would venture to say no to the drawers. There’s a set of drawers provided in the room though and they are pretty nice I thought.

I ditto AggieEngineer’s sentiments on all topics. My S was in the commons this past year and while I never visited the laundry room there were times he mentioned he had to wait his turn to use a washer/dryer.

The closet space is minimal, tall, but not very deep or wide. Aside from clothes on hangers my S kept a broom and stick vac in his closet and on the shelving in the closet stored his laundry items (detergent, fabric softner, etc) on one and a few nonperishable snacks on the other.

One fridge and micro per room is sufficient as well. There really wasn’t space for 2 of each. Have your S work out a deal with his roommate so that both don’t show up with the appliances. One can bring the fridge, the other a microwave and share them. My son’s roommate said he wasn’t bringing any appliances. He was a good roommate, he just didn’t feel the need for the appliances and never asked for S to share them.

You may be better off using some type of underbed drawers for additional storage. There is quite a bit of room there.

Thanks, AGGie ENGineeR & TexaCo Mom.
You mentioned utilizing underbed space. Are all the beds in the Commons dorms the XL Twin length. We’ve thought of having him bring a twin mattress of his own and didn’t know if it should be XL or not. His older sister attends UT, and in her first year, the mattresses were pretty flimsy, so she struggled along with the extra pad and got by that year, but we’re wondering if they can just bring their own mattress from the beginning and what size it should be.
In case he doesn’t get the Commons, do you know if the other dorms mostly have Twin XL or Twin?
I’ve heard the AC isn’t that great; did you take a fan (or was there room for one)?
Thanks again!

[Residence Hall Living - Room Specifications](http://reslife.tamu.edu/housing/specs/) choose whichever dorm and it’ll show mattress size.

I believe you can bring your own mattress but that just sounds cumbersome to me, I haven’t seen any on campus kids use an extra one. I believe most, if not all dorms (I know some of the single sex dorms are special) use a twin xl, or twin. I can’t speak for the A/C in the commons, but in the mod quad, each room had it’s own adjustable A/C and if it ever did go out, a simple work order fixed it right back up!

Not sure what size the mattress is considered, but S had xl twin sheets and they fit OK. The quality of any dorm mattress is not great, but have found using a good foam mattress pad and quilted cover help a good bit and I think it would be easier than having to move a mattress.

As for the A/C, it worked OK. I don’t recall S ever mentioning being too warm. He did keep a personal table top fan on his nightstand near the bed though. Depending how much “stuff” your S brings with him, there could be room for a floor fan in a corner of the room. The times I was there was spent either moving him in or out and of course, it felt quite warm after lugging boxes up/down the stairs ;)

Did you bring his own nightstand, or do those come with the dorm room?

The dorms come furnished with bed/mattress, nightstand, small chest, a desk, chair and bookcase for each student. The only thing S had to supply was his personal belongings.
