Hi there,
So, are there only communal bathrooms at Brown? Are there any private bathrooms that can locked but shared between multiple people?
Hi there,
So, are there only communal bathrooms at Brown? Are there any private bathrooms that can locked but shared between multiple people?
Freshman dorms on pembroke campus have individual bathrooms. I believe only Perkins, way land, hope, little field, and keeney have truly communal.
So am I understanding correctly that you are saying at Andrews, a freshman dorm on the Pembroke campus, for example, each dorm room has its own bathroom? Not sink, but bathroom? And there are not communal bathrooms everywhere in Wriston Quad?
Communal does not mean gender-neutral, does it?
communal in this case means multiple people occupying the bathroom at the same time (e.g. there are 3 toilets, 4 sinks, 2 showers). Andrews has bathrooms that are shared by many on the floor but only one person uses it at a time.
Wriston quad (outside of wayland) is not freshman housing so that’s why I didn’t mention it. Wriston quad is all communal bathrooms.
What are you worried about? Watch too many prison movies lately?
Interesting about Andrews. Don’t even want to ask how you got that info.
Are you advising the other dorms you did mention–Perkins, Hope, Littlefield–are first-year dorms? Dunno about that. So not following you here.
OP: The standard configuration at Brown is communal bathrooms. That includes all freshman dorms. Exceptions are some upperclass dorms that have suite or apartment configurations, such as Minden and Barbour for example. There are probably a few others.
If you see a dorm described as containing singles and doubles, primarily (as opposed to suites or apartments) you can be pretty well-assured there are communal, not individual bathrooms. Kinda makes sense, right?
How many people are using the bathrooms at any given time…I have no clue.
Emery, Wooley, Morris and Champlain – all on Pembroke – have bathrooms with single toilet and shower that can be locked. One bathroom is shared by 2-3 rooms. AFAIK, these are still freshmen dorms.

The bathrooms in Keeney are communal and frequently gender-neutral – in that both men and women use them at the same time.
Hope, Littlefield, Perkins are all sophomore dorms now. Miller is now freshman, as is the top floor of Metcalf – no idea what the bathroom situation is there (used to be communal, but they’ve been renovated).
The kids on the floor often decide to make one male and one female, even if they are designated gender neutral.
