I am a freshman in the class of 2015. I have a choice between dorm rooms with private and communal bathrooms. I know that only the communal bathrooms are looked after by the cleaning service, and as for the private bathrooms it's up to the residents to keep them clean. I do not know who my roommates will be (did not pick anyone ahead of time) so I don't know if they will be clean or dirty. If they're dirty I obviously wouldn't want a private bathroom, but if they're reasonably clean and organized it would be SUPER convenient.
What do you think I should do?

Unless you’re willing to clean the whole bathroom by yourself all the time, I would go for the communal bathroom.

Normally I would say private, but in this case you would be taking a pretty big risk as to whether your roommates would do their fair share in keeping the bathroom clean. I say go with the communal bathroom this year, then next year when you get to choose your roommates, get a private.

Get a private, and if the roommates suck just use the shared one if there is one nearby.

I have a private bathroom thats shared with the suite mates. All it takes is one to make the place a ****hole. I just walked in and almost tripped over the mountain of dirty clothes left behind by the “one”.

He also never cleans. In fact he’s so dirty I’m pretty sure the mold growing in the shower is because of him. There’s crap everywhere, and I dare not touch it. Who else is going to clean it? Not him, so it just accumulates, and gets ****tier.

I’m transferring and probably gonna have a communal bathroom. I’m sadly looking forward to it.

communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, communal bathrooms, **** can’t stress enough how important it is to have communal bathrooms if you’re not in a bizarre situation with a single+bathroom or just one roommate+bathroom.
i started out wishing for private but now i know the truth. communal bathrooms.

Man, I remember one of my roommates wouldn’t check after flushing to be sure the bowl was clear. After my other roommate and I told him how normal people deal with hygene he just laughed and made it a point that he had just destroyed the bowl.

Not sure how “private” this bathroom is. Do you know how many people you would share it with? That would make a pretty big difference in your experience - the more people, the messier it will get. Communal bathrooms can be annoying, but it’s nice to not have to clean them.

I’m a HS senior. Are there usually bunch of a-holes who just hang out and goof off in the bathrooms? I really hate those kinds of people in the locker rooms at my school. They either enjoy annoying people or have a weird fetish.

private bathrooms are fine. I mean, you may need a decent resistance to “dirty” but its not that bad. I am sharing a bathroom with three other guys. Yes it smells like **** sometimes, yes it is super hot and the fans broken, yes I’ve washed the shower once all year, etc. But, I mean, its no unusable.

If you are a neat freak then maybe, but otherwise I would go with private. Its really convient.

No, there are way better places to hang out.

I’d go with the communal. You really can’t go wrong with it.

I would say private for sure.

If your roommates are dirty, that sucks, but cleaning a bathroom really isn’t that bad, trust me…it used to be my chore at home…I would have to clean 3 bathrooms (all full too, no half baths)…and I had a family of 9 then…including 4 guys.

Communal bathrooms suck worse. Over the weekends they get nasty beyond belief (at least at my school since the custodial staff doesn’t clean them on Saturday and Sunday), things break and don’t get fixed, you have no idea who has been in there or what they’ve been doing (in my friend’s dorm, having sex in the showers in pretty common as is giving BJs in the stalls)…

i was going to opt for a private bathroom before coming to college because i was nervous, but the communal is REALLY not that bad. & the cleaning people are nice (:

I’ve had both. I’ve also had roommates throw up and not make it to the toilet. Go with communal.

Plus, sometimes private is shared by 2,3,4 people. One toilet/shower for four people is no fun when everybody has a class at the same time (very common in the first year)

The communal bath room is not that bad, but I prefer a private bath. I’d rather clean it and have more privacy.
