I imagined the BGO to be an old curmudgeon of a guy...we had only exchanged emails. Imagine my surprise when a young (30-something) guy shows up...very nice, personable, etc. He was so kind and helpful! Son is torn between USNA and USMA...the BGO gave him a lot to think about.

^^^^

Some of us aren't even guys! :)

Seriously, they are trying to "recruit" as BGOs younger grads and parents of mids/recent mids because these individuals typically have more recent experiences with USNA. However, many people who fall into this category are still on active duty, have families, busy jobs, etc. and simply can't make the time commitment.

Some BGO's never went to the Academy - they are reserve officers. My daughter had a reserve officer for a BGO and he was pretty much a nothing.

If you get an Academy grad or even parent at least you have some Academy perspective.

Those of you with BGO's who are knowledgeable and dedicated are lucky - not all are like that.

Yeah, he was a USNA grad as well..big ring and all! And...he has 3 boys, just like me. We bonded. Am going to have to throw S in the car (or plane) and take him to Annapolis for a look-see. USMA is flying him up in a week; but navy hasn't made that offer yet. However, the dive season starts in 2 weeks and then all weekends are shot til Feb.

mom3boys ... I know it's all enticing when being recruited vs. doing the recruiting. Help your son to see beyond his ego and possibly a few bucks, should USNA not pay for an official visit. Once he arrives wherever 'tis he's going, it won't mean a hill of beans, IF he can swim. If so, he makes the team either place. And in 4 years, it'll mean even less. What's far more important is trying to determine where he fits. My point is don't allow the official visit thing to steer the wheel with SA's. Remember, they ALL get full rides. And they're ALL delivered pretty much the same, a "nickel at a time", as I believe the saying begins? :D So all this is about is courtship. Once married, it's all pretty much the same aside from the opportunities and desires at the end of the 4 year "honeymoon" sort of ...

Groundhog is correct. USNA, in my dealings, is extremely slow responding to many athletes. Hang on. They will eventually get there.

Thanks...that's good to know. The athletics is what will get him...I don't think he is a strong enough candidate (compared to what I read here, anyway) to get in w/ out the sports. He has a 1290 SAT, 3.67 GPA, and is an eagle scout. He is captain of the dive team, and that's about it...pretty laid back, but has always talked about a career in the military. He didn't think he had the stats to get in, but then as an athlete sent info and caught the attention of the coach at navy and west point. We'll see where we go from here. If he isn't invited on an official visit, we'll still take him...no question about that.
