Communication & Journalism

I'm intersted in majoring in Communication & Journalism (undergrad) but have no idea which universities to apply to. I just thought of this as a last minute thing.

Anyway, does anyone know what universities are top in this field? I realize deadlines are soon, so I really need to get off my butt and get some applications in! Any suggestions?

I've already applied to UK universities for dentistry, I am in the process of applying to some unis in the US for architecture, but I think I would actually enjoy something to do with communication more. Argh, I'm very confused about what I want to do, so to be on the safe side, I'm just considering everything that I find interesting.

.......bump

Try looking at Northwestern, which I think has a great communications program. Univeristy of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has an awesome journalism program. Definitely check those schools out.

Thanks! Will do

Depending on your stats and what kind of program you want, you might try

U Kansas
U Missouri
U Maryland
U Indiana

Syracuse also has excellent programs in these fields.

Northwestern! Best J-School in the country!

The top journalism/communications schools are generally considered to be:
Northwestern, Syracuse, University of Southern California, University of Missouri-Columbia, NYU, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Boston U.

Other very good programs can be found at: The University of Miami, The University of ORegon, Flagler College (Florida), Ithaca College, Emerson College, UCLA, Creighton U, U of Florida, Macalester, U of Michigan, U of Wisconsin, Fordham, Arizona State, Pepperdine, Santa Clara U, U of Texas-Austin, as well as many other schools.

Some things to look for in a journalism/communications program:
(1) courses that focus on developing writing and researching skills
(2) faculty that have actually worked in the field
(3) the availability of internships
(4) job placement services and alumni connections
(5) availability of a variety of courses in various communications sub-areas (i.e., public relations, broadcast, advertising, magazine writing, etc.)
(6) equipment and resources of the program - computers, broadcast facilities, etc.

Northwestern or Syracuse.

Thanks for the list.
I need to narrow it down now..

I'm from Oman in the middle east so I'd prefer a uni on the east coast since it's closer. Also, weather conditions.. not too cold, since I'm so used to the stifling heat here.
No big cities that have a high crime rate.. Rule out Chicago and New York..
Somewhere where there's a lot of diversity.. I don't want to be the only odd one out :s

I was considering Boston U..

Carolyn gave a good list but forgot U of Georgia.

As for your requirements, Boston U and Syracuse could be good, especially Boston since it's right in the city and near an international airport.

I wouldn't worry about NYU or Northwestern, they are in safe neighborhoods.

But they are cold. You're going to have trouble finding a warm, diverse school on the east coast with a good journalism program. You may have to suffer through cold weather.

UNC Chapel Hill and George Washington?

Boston U and Syracuse, especially Syracuse, can get pretty cold.

Libellula, if you are worrying about being cold... then I wouldn't suggest Boston University. University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's climate would probably suit you better.

Okay! Thanks so much for all the replies :) I really appreciate it.

I would focus on a large university so if you change your mind, you can change your major.

I'll keep that in mind. :)
