I'm a senior in high school, and will be attending Michigan State University next fall. I'm not completely decided on a major yet, but I'm really interested in public relations work. At MSU however, there isn't an actual public relations major- its communication with a public relations specialization. I've always heard that communication is considered an "easy" major, and I don't want to sell myself short, but it's definitely something I'm interested in. Is there another major that would be more beneficial to me, or should I just pursue a communication major and hope that if I work hard and graduate with a high GPA that I won't be considered to have taken the easy way out?

I plan on majoring in communications and although many people say its an easy major, a lot of people say its a very helpful major in a sense that its pretty broad and you have a diverse variety of options after undergrad graduation. If you’re worried about communications being looked at as “easy” then major in English or Journalism or just do a double-major.

Look at some famous people nowadays…Damien Fahey (TRL host) majored in communications, Ellen Degeneres majored in communications, Olivia Palermo(okay she’s not FAMOUS, but she is pretty successful. she was on the show The City).

good luck on your “major” choice

Some people do say that Communications is an easy major and if you are lazy person who doesn’t want to do much you can sneak by but I’ve found that earning my degree has been challenging because I want to be the best. I’m one semester away from earning my Public Relations degree at BYU and their program is quite rigorous and they provide lots of opportunities for students to go above and beyond. I think what matters is what you want to get out of it and not what other people might say.
