Communication Sciences and Disorders/ Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Undergrad Schools

I’m interested in becoming a speech therapist/SLP and I want to major undergrad in a related major, which many schools don’t have, but it’s something important to me. I know some schools that have it that I’m interested in: UT Austin, UT Dallas, Texas Woman’s University, and Emerson College. I’m a junior in hs so I know I have time to consider colleges, but I’d just like to see what other colleges are an option. I’m having difficulty finding a list of programs that aren’t for graduate school, and it’s tough searching through many different colleges for a certain degree. So I would really appreciate the help! If you know any schools that have a good program, please let me know! Thank you!

You can look through this list. This is a list of grad schools but many (if not most) of these schools also have undergraduate degrees in speech pathology. I would just look up each school on the list and see if they have undergraduate degrees as well. It will be a few hours well spent. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-health-schools/pathology-rankings

My D majored in psychology as an undergraduate (with a lot of science thrown in) and is now in a Masters in speech pathology program. Her options were limited as many Masters programs require either an undergraduate degree in speech pathology or around 7-10 prerequisite courses (depending on the school). It was competitive to get in to the grad program without an undergraduate degree in speech. Some people go for a post-bac year to get the speech requirements but she was fortunate to get into a program directly – however, it will take her longer to complete her Masters than if she had an undergraduate degree in speech pathology as her first year is being spent on the prerequisite courses.

She is very excited about the field.

If you go to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) website, you can filter the programs by state, graduate level schools, undergrad programs, etc.

My sister is a newly-graduated SLP and she went to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh–they have a 5 year program, so you’ll come out with a bachelors degree and a masters. Getting into grad school for SLP is really hard, so try to look into other schools that offer 5 year programs.

Getting into grad school for speech is extremely competitive, particularly in the northeast.

Well, I had written a long response, but now seeing the previous posts, I realize my info is outdated! It seems 20 years is a long time in Speech Pathology years.

Best of luck to you. Speech language pathology is a fascinating field that attracts some wonderful people!

If you are sure you want speech pathology I would look into direct admit undergrad speech pathology programs where you will have the option to go straight through for your Masters degree (such as the one noted in post #3 above)
