Communication Studies Major

Can anyone who is currently majoring in communication studies talk about how much they are enjoying this major, if it is really impacted, what kinds of classes/skills they are learning, or anything else they find interesting about this major?

I'm seriously leaning towards putting this down on my application as my major so I just wanted to know how people really felt about it.

Thanks!

Anyone...? :)

You can put it down on your application, but in order to be a declared comm major you have to apply at the end of your freshman or sophomore year and be formally accepted. It IS as impacted as is rumored, it's one of the most highly impacted majors in the school. But I've found the program to be completely worth it. Classes are largely theoretical (as are most North campus classes), but the school offers plenty of ECs which might allow you to gain practical experience in the field/s of your choice. Internships are also really important in comm, since that's the only way you actually learn how to do things. You don't get applicable skills in classes, you're on your own for that.

Generally I think people know whether or not they're into comm and/or the related fields after they take a few intro courses. So I say get into UCLA, take comm 10 and a few other lower divs, and then see if you want to compete to be accepted. Comm 10 is widely known to be a weeder class of sorts, but if you're interested in the material and you do the work you should be fine. Very few people are accepted into the major as incoming sophomores, and the bulk of them are accepted as incoming juniors. This is normal. GPA is the most important factor for acceptance.

allie, thanks for your reply! i greatly appreciate it.

so i take it that you were/are a communications major yourself right? so if so, when you were filling out your college apps, did you put down communications as your intended major? i'd really love to get into ucla but i hope putting down such an impacted major doesn't hurt my chances. your description was really helpful though. it seems interesting! :]

i think allie was a transfer admit?
