Hi, I have two children applying to 5 private schools in Westchester and Fairfield County for 6th grade admission. We have attended open houses, interviews, tours and shadow days, and a few social events where offered. Their applications are complete and they took the ISEE today. As we are new to this process, I am uncertain what level of additional communication we should be having (if any) with the schools to increase their chances of admission. Do we contact the admissions office and inquire further about their candidacy? Do we schedule a meeting with the FA office as we are also applying for FA. I don’t know what kind of ongoing communication is necessary or appropriate. Do most people submit the application, take the test and wait for results, or do they maintain ongoing dialogue with the schools they are interested in attending? Thank you in advance for any perspective you can share!
When we did this for BS for 9th grade years ago, we sat tight at this point until we had decisions. At that point, we re-visited our favorites. I think that’s the norm, but others may have different perspectives.
No. They have all the information that they need. If there is something that they want to discuss, they will contact you.
IMO, most parents who don’t want the school to think of them as “those parents” will let admissions officers do their jobs. If there is something burning that you need to ask them, by all means contact them, but not for the purpose of “increas[ing] their chances of admissions.” Contacting them with mindless inquiries will make you remembered, but not in a good way.
Thank you for your replies! Validates my thoughts and most appreciated!
If there are any additional events then you can certainly attend those. Ask questions if something is relevant but otherwise no additional contact with admissions or FA office until decisions is necessary.
Good luck with the process.
Sit tight. I know it’s hard. But you don’t want to come across as a pest. If the schools invite you to an event then attend. But don’t pester them.
The TSAO schools have a silent period between now and M10. So they are not supposed to be doing any ‘hints’ about admissibility.
Is it normal to hear from the AOs at all at this point? One called the other day and expressed how excited she was that DDs application was completed. I was worried something was missing when I saw the number on caller id
Yes. Sometimes admissions people and other staff will call. Others will email. You will probably also get a lot of nice stuff in the mail. Some schools do this purely to boost yield. It certainly is a good sign, but doesn’t mean anything. Plenty of people on this board have reported receiving contact during the silent period, only to have it result in a rejection on M10.
As @sgolpal2 said, it is not uncommon, but part of this depends upon the school.
Regardless, read nothing into it. Some AOs will communicate after the application is in and issue a rejection on M10, while others will maintain radio silence and issue an acceptance.
