Can anyone tell me anything about the Communications department at GW? It says on the website that it is "highly selective." Is it considered a good program at GW? The web site also says that you can't apply to the major until you are already in the college. Do many apply and not get in? I would hate to see my son select GW and then find out next year he can't get into the major he wants.

Thanks!

First off, direct-admission to SMPA as a freshman is competitive (30-50 direct admit frosh according to CC threads from previous years). It is not as hard to transfer into SMPA in your soph year (look at: “question about SMPA transfers”).

Secondly, SMPA consists of 2 majors: journalism/mass com, and political communications. Poli com is considered unique to GW from what i know. I’m not sure which area of commuications your son is looking into, but I think communications programs at diff schools have different areas of strength. GW’s programs are broader, i believe. Ex. in Syracuse Newhouse, PR & Advertising are actual majors, but at GW, they’re not. I can’t really say how “good” the program is because this depends on your son’s needs and what type of commuications program he wants:)

However, I do think SMPA is strong and well-regarded at GW, but it does not have the brand-name recognition as Elliot does. Selectivity for SMPA is said to be up there with Elliot, so yes, I do believe it’s a *good *program!

PM me if you have more q’s. I’ll be attending GW this fall for SMPA. Good luck! :)

20091990 - when do you begin SMPA? I’d love to hear about your journey towards that particular goal. My D is v interested, which I support. Are you entering as a Freshman?

yes i’ll be a freshman this fall
i’ll be sure to keep you posted then!

Got my packet today and got into the SMPA!!

ohhh yessss yayy! congrats!
i was starting to think no one on CC applied there or something!
will you be attending this fall?

Thaaanks!
I’m not sure yet. It’s in my top 3 with Syracuse Newhouse and NYU. But, I’m leaning towards GW!!!
