which schools are good for communications major? also, among the UC schools, which ones are good for communications?

is communications a good major for a career in marketing? is psychology also a good major for a career in marketing? or what type of major do you recommend (for a student who goes to UCSD).

Communications CAN be a good base for a career in marketing...It worked for me!
However, one caveat, no matter which major you choose, make sure to do lots of internships, preferably one in marketing communications (i.e., helping a business or other organization with their marketing materials). That is the key to landing your first job.

Psychology majors tend to be shuttled into more sales oriented marketing jobs while communications majors often end up working for advertising agencies, p.r. agencies, and in corporate communications.

UCSD has one of the best programs in communications in the UC system --- but make sure you get those internships under your belt.

I'd say UCSD is best followed by UCSB. UCLA's program focuses more on film/TV than on general communications and UC Davis's program is impacted. The problem I have with all of the UC communications programs is that they tend to focus a bit too much on "theory" and not enough on
"skills" classes --- but, of course, employers want skills, not theory. The UC communications programs aren't geared towards the job market, but towards getting people ready to do graduate level research in communications. Of course, that's just my opinion.

If I was looking to major in communications, I think I'd consider SDSU --- maybe not as "prestigious" as a UC, but it's communications/journalism department is very strong, skills oriented, with lots of internship opportunities. And, the business school at SDSU has some excellent professors in the area of advertising, marketing, and business communications. I think that type of dual major or even just courses in those two different schools would provide much more "marketable" skills after graduation.

Other options I'd consider would include USC (one of the best communications programs in the country, with opportunities to focus specifically on marketing communications), Pepperdine, and Santa Clara U.
All three are excellent.

In any case, someone who wants to go into marketing would be best served by taking some specific business classes (especially marketing theory) and focusing on internships to build a solid resume with specific samples of work for after graduation.
