Hi. I am a prospective transfer student for TCNJ. I am highly considering going a theater major route now, but unfortunately, TCNJ does not have a major for theater. I know that communications as a major with a theater minor is common. Does anyone have any advice or comments about this? How can I make the most of my theater education with the minor and are there enough opportunities, really, for me to perform outside of the classroom, as well?

I can't speak from experience, but from what I've gathered I don't really think TCNJ has much to offer in regards to theater, despite the fact that they offer it as a minor. I've tried researching the musical theater and non-musical theater groups they have on campus, but I didn't really find much. I am also interested in pursing Communications and theater, and when I visited TCNJ the head of the English department under which the teater minor falls told me that TCNJ honestly doesn't have much of a theater program, and he recommended that I look into Montclair State University in NJ. I think Montclair has a stronger program in both communications and theater, but at the very least it definitely has a stronger program in theater.

Basically if you seriously want to pursue theater, TCNJ probably isn't the best school to go to in NJ. In my opinion, Montclair may be a better fit, and Rider University's theater program is also very strong. My choir director told me Rider's program is as good as a conservatory but with the liberal arts background. Of course, if you're set on TCNJ, I'm sure you'll get something out of it, but in the theater world TCNJ's program doesn't really cause much of a ripple. I think it's basically nonexistent.

How is the communications program (Film/TV Production) though? Is it strong? From what I read it seems alright but I’m really not sure about it. I won’t visit the campus until the end of major. I’m caught between tcnj and Pace University(Plealsantville). I’m curious as to which will give me better job placement.
