Communications major hard to get into?

Hey guys, I'm at Santa Monica College right now finishing up my first year and hoping to transfer to LMU as my second choice next to UCLA. I know at UCLA comm is an impacted major which requires you to have at least a 3.9 GPA and thats whats I'm going to have by the end of this year. I will finish my pre reqs for LMU by the end of next year so I will have them by transfer. Is comm hard to get into even if you have a 3.9+ GPA and how good/respected is the communications dept. at LMU?

Btw, as of right now I don't have a job, nor do I do any ec's. Does that significantly lower my chances?

i applied as a LMU transfer for fall 2010 going in as a sophomore and got accepted. i come from a big university and had a 3.9 my fall gpa and a leadership position and some many clubs. i mostly relied on my HS EC’s because i had tons. my SAT was only a 1550 and i applied to comm.

i also got accepted to chapman’s public relations program and im going there instead…i don’t think LMU’s comm dept. is too special or good. LMU is known for the business and film school that’s why. but yeah, all in all, their comm dept is not hard to get into…

Thanks for the info! Even though you say the comm dept isn’t the best I still would like it as an alternative to UCLA’s. Comm is the only major I see myself interested in.

Yeah for sure you should apply to LMU’s comm just in case, because UCLA might be a long shot. But if UCLA doesn’t work out, LMU would be a great alternative. I feel a little sad turning down LMU though, cuz the campus is frickin gorgeous! Sigh…idk Chapman or LMU…hopefully I’m making the right decision! :/

^ UCLA isn’t even all it’s cracked up to be. Overcrowding, tuition hike, and they couldn’t even send me a rejection letter after I spent 2+ months writing and composing my Screenwriting app; they didn’t even confirm they got it! Total waste of $60 + shipping for that package (~$10). Ugh, maybe I’m just bitter.

Oh well, LMU’s better anyway. I’ll be going there in the fall to prove UC wrong. I didn’t want to do indie films anyway, and have THEM own it. :)

korhawaus, I’m pretty sure Chapman or LMU would be the right choice - they’re both fantastic schools. But since LMU’s in LA, you might have better connections for internships? But yeah, either should be fine. If you’re dedicated to your craft, it shouldn’t matter where you go. Good luck! :)

Thanks tokyofever. I already chose chapman though, and i’m feeling confident now lol. Heard there are lots of great internships around orange county. so should be good lol.

@korhawaus, I will definetly apply to LMU, the pics of the campus look amazing. The only thing with going to UCLA is that I just moved her in August from Iowa, and West LA is like the only are I know.

Nick,
Wow Iowa! I was starting to believe I was the only one from far away being from New Orleans.
Good luck to you and hope you get in!

New Orleans is pretty far too! Thanks a lot and good luck to you too! :)
