Communications Major. What are strong ECs that I can do?

I did a lot of ECs in high school but now at my CC I am not really involved in anything, I really want to do ECs that pertain to my major in some way, something that can give me a better look at it and beneficial not just some type of filler. I know Internships seem like the perfect answer but most places do not want interns that are in their 1st year or 2nd years at college and that aren't going to a 4 year yet.

Do any comm majors or anyone have any good suggestions???

See if any local businesses will let you do some freelance work for them. Like take some little restaurant with a really ugly menu and tell them that you can make it pretty for really cheap. Good EC, and it makes you a little cash. If you can do it for the first few for free, you can save copies of your work to show to other businesses and then start charging a little based on your reputation and experience.

If you're into music, another idea is to maybe try finding a local band that wants to gain attention. Present them with a plan and tell them you'll either do it for free or cheap. Work to develop a street team for them, to help them make posters/advertising materials, help them design a CD cover, set up a good website for them, get them attention in your CC's newspaper (if they have one) or a free local paper, or maybe even try to get them in as the opening act for a slightly more famous band.

Speaking of your CC's newspaper, if there is one, you might want to sign on with them. Maybe work as a business manager or doing advertisements, or you could just write. If they don't have one, see if you can start one up.

If there's a free local newspaper in your community, see if they need any volunteers for any kind of work, from writing to advertisements to layout to secretarial work.

See if any nearby TV/radio stations will let you volunteer to do grunt work/secretarial work.

See if any local business needs a webmaster if you're good with computers.

Is there a debate/speech team at your CC? Join. If there isn't one, start one.

These are just examples. There's so many possibilities. Tailor them to fit your individual interests and goals.

Oh, and this might be helpful too: Communication Studies/Speech Communication.

I looked at your backposts and I saw your other question about taking a foreign language too. I think you should go with Spanish or a different language if you're worried about ASL transferring/meeting school's requirements. I don't think any colleges will think it's weird; I would just think, "Oh, ok, ani_zarkesh just wanted to try a new language. That's cool."

Good luck with everything!

Thank you so much! that was really really helpful!!!

I must agree that was some excellent advice. I am in a similar situation and I definitely found this helpful!

That is good advice. im also a communications major and need that. thanks
