Communications Major

I am very interested in going into a Communications major at UA with a minor in advertising. I’ve heard great things about the communications school but can anyone attest to it?

How’s this for attestation?

The University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences – with more than 13,000 graduates, 2,000 majors, top facilities, distinguished faculty (many with national and international reputations) and comprehensive programs – is simply one of the best of its kind in the nation.

• CIS is frequently listed as top 10 in program quality and
research, with endowments among the largest in communication
schools.

• CIS mass communication programs are accredited by the
Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass
Communications. Recent reviews describe the College as
tier-one in every respect. The School of Library and Information
Studies houses Alabama’s only library education program
accredited by the American Library Association.

• A comprehensive study published by The Media Studies
Journal ranked the College in the top 20 among more than 450
mass communication programs. U.S. News and World Report
ranked two of our graduate programs in the top 15.

• In a 10-year study, the Association for Communication
Administration ranked CIS research production sixth in the
nation. A Journalism Quarterly study put us in the top 10 over a
10-year period.

• The forensic program continues its record as one of the
leading championship programs in the country. In 2009,
communication studies faculty taught a record number
of undergraduate and MA students, while publishing two
books and more than 19 research essays/book chapters in
distinguished outlets such as the Quarterly Journal of Speech
and the Journal of Health Communication.

• Students in the Department of Journalism routinely place in
regional and national student competitions. Journalism students
have won two national Hearst overall championships, in addition
to scores of collegiate media awards. Graduates hold top
positions in local, regional and national media organizations.

• Telecommunication and film’s broadcast news teams
consistently win professional Associated Press awards, beating
out professionals while they are still students.

• PRWeek recently named the public relations program one of
the top three in the nation. The student advertising team placed
second in the American Advertising Federation National Student
Advertising Competition.

• The School of Library and Information Studies is ranked 22nd
in the current U.S. News and World Report graduate program
rankings, advancing eight places from 30th just two years ago.
With a record number of graduate students, a world class faculty
and staff and exceptional and generous alumni, the School is
fast becoming a library school of choice not just in Alabama but
nationally and beyond.

• WVUA-TV is one of only a few commercial television stations
in the nation owned by an academic unit. It leads the state in
winning news awards in its market category, many of which
began as student assignments.

• CIS is home of the award-winning Center for Public Television
& Radio. The Center produces programs for Alabama Public
Television aired nationally by PBS. CPT&R has received four
regional Emmys and scores of other awards.

• Half of Alabama’s largest daily newspapers, dozens of its
weeklies and TV and radio stations have University of Alabama
graduates as owner, publisher, general manager or top editor.
CIS alumni hold top positions at newspapers, magazines, in
broadcasting, library and information centers, cable, online,
public relations and advertising throughout the nation.

• Of the five University of Alabama alumni who have won Pulitzer
Prizes, four studied in CIS programs — Hazel Brannon Smith,
Nelle Harper Lee, Ron Casey and Howell Raines. Another
Pulitzer Prize winner in the College is Rick Bragg, a professor in
the journalism department.
