This is for my friend who is beginning his college search so I thought you guys could get him started on some schools for him.

Here are some things that are important to him

East Coast

Strong Communications program

Strong academic reputation

Strong school spirit

Students Flock to the stadiums

Many of the students were varsity athletes

nothing too small or too big anything between 5 thousand and 30,000

Prestigious

Tim_ND08, how about the University of Pittsburgh?

East Coast-- Pittsburgh isn't exactly east coast, but it's close.

Strong Communications program-- Their communications major is pretty popular; they have a great student newspaper, radio and tv station. Plus the city of Pittsburgh offers a lot of hands-on opportunity.

Strong academic reputation-- U.S. News top 20 public school.

Strong school spirit-- 8 out of 10 people at any given time are wearing something Pitt related. The basketball and football programs are top-notch and always well attended.

Students Flock to the stadiums-- The basketball games ALWAYS sell out and it is extremely tough to get tickets. The football program is on the rise and is also very popular.

Many of the students were varsity athletes-- Pitt attracts a lot of athletic students.

nothing too small or too big anything between 5 thousand and 30,000-- 17,000 undergrads.

Prestigious-- Pitt students annually receieve the some of country's top awards.

Your grades are slightly below average, but with good ECs you shouldn't have a problem getting in.

shrug I have no clue what the new SATs translate out to, but Penn might be a good reach... the school spirit/sporting aspect is different but those who are involved tend to be involved in a big way.

Some other possibilities: Ithaca College (NY), American in DC, U of Maryland-College Park (bit of a stretch out of state), Villanova in PA, Fairfield in CT, University of South Carolina, James Madison in Virginia.

Syracuse seems to fit the bill- great school spirit, good size, athletics...
"Communications" is a pretty broad major. If your friend in interested in something specific, check out the Newhouse majors. They've got an excellent program and a great network of alums in the NYC television industry.

It is way more difficult to get into Newhouse specifically than SU in general.
