Communications/Media Studies Thread!

rejected …:(UCLA = dream school
but it was expecting
congrats for those who got accepted
and for those who do not…well life continues so JUST SMILE :)

At least there’s still Cal. If i dont get in Cal, then idk…

I also applied for Media Studies at Berleley but rejected by UCLA with my overall 3.85 GPA.
Rep of UCLA said that I was rejected was because I got 2 Bs in my calculus class and Chinese Literature(OMG, it was long time ago when I was at a University in China and they are not even related to Communications majors) even though I maintained my 4.0 GPA at a CC in the US. And the rep said I did not apply an alternate major so I was rejected.

I am afraid that Cal is gonna reject me for the same reason. Hope that they look at different things and I still have a shot for Media Studies at Berkeley.

I meant to post this comment instead of a thread…sorry mods!

I’m at a CCC right now and my major for UC is communications. I’m looking at communications for Davis & San Diego, but Media Studies at UC Berkeley is my first choice.

I got a 3.75 gpa last semester, will be getting 3.6 this semester (3 A’s and 1 C in geology ): )

My question is, will a gpa around the 3.6-3.7 range be too low to get into Cal? I know GPA isn’t everything but it is definitely important. Since Davis & san diego have tag’s I’m not as worried. But I’m worried that with rising competition year to year, my current GPA won’t cut it.

I’m nearly done with my pre-reqs, will have an A.A. in english by graduation (tentatively may 2011), in Phi Theta Kappa, the Honors Program at my CCC, and have done volunteer work and am in some clubs at school…

What can I do from here, besides earn better grades? I am applying to other schools besides UCD, UCB, and UCSD by the way, that’s just going by major.

Thanks for the help–I’m applying for fall 2011 admission by the way.

Did anyone here got accepted at UCLA as comm major ?
Is it that impacted ???

i did. not that hard. just get 3.9+ with TAP and finish all prereqs available at ur school. do that, and ur in. i didn’t have any relevant ECs and i wrote my essays the day it was due. i doubt they put much weight on the essays since i wrote about how i want to go to berkeley

^ Congrats ! Your GPA is super high though :)

@iHateCeltics

I have a 3.9, all prereqs completed with all A’s at least one semester before apps period, and had relevant EC (like production work for a feature film). I wrote my essay focused on UCLA’s comm program and also about how it’s a great opp to attend a school so close to the industry hub.

Yet they didn’t accept me.

I guess TAP is the God Mode that outweighs everything then? I didn’t know about TAP until less than a year ago, but I was informed at a UC workshop by an admin counselor last fall that TAP doesn’t have too much of an impact for heavily impacted majors like UCLA’s comm anyway; apparently, someone told me the wrong info.

But yeah, congrats on getting in. Take advantage of the school’s resources, at least for the sake of those who couldn’t be there with you.

Bump for Corinnejay!

I was accepted to UCLA as a comm major. 4.0 GPA. International student. No TAP, no honors. If I get in to Berkeley I won’t know where to go. I wanna double major in psych and for me that’s only possible at Berkeley.

@mytime09 i would suggest that you try to bring up your gpa more. a gpa of 3.9+ is ideal. i don’t know of anyone that got in UCLA Communication Studies/UCB Media Studies with a 3.8 and below. The lowest one that got in (I read from past acceptance threads) for UCB Media Studies is 3.88. I got rejected from both schools with a 3.78 gpa. I spoke with an admissions rep over the phone right after I found out about my rejection from UCLA and she had told me that Communication Studies is the MOST impacted major in UCLA so yeah, good luck with getting in! Some kids that have a 4.0 get rejected still so try to bring up your gpa more!

:)

@kc_sunshine hello! I actually have a few more questions for you regarding media studies/communications program in general. would you mind if i message you? :)

@hellstranger57 Thanks for the reply. I’m worried I don’t even have chance now with my GPA.

What about applying under rhetoric? I guess I’ve already give up. :(

you’ll never know until you try. I think anyone has a chance with this major if they got a 3.5+. I recently got into Media Studies with a 3.6. I knew it wasn’t very high, but it’s still a good gpa. I was also in the berkeley tap, had amazing essays, and had good extracurriculars.

To be honest, I wouldn’t recommend applying to UCLA as a Comm Studies major if you don’t have a a 3.9+, it’s probably a waste of time :/

However, mytime09, I think you have a pretty decent shot at Berkeley rhetoric as long as you maintain the GPA you have right now–it’s not nearly as competitive as UCLA Comm Studies.

Good luck to you!

i got into berk mass media major, with only a 3.6 and ive done barely any pre reqs, maybe only half. anyone have any idea how i got in?! i haven’t done any extra curricular and my essay definitely wasnt all that great.

^^Wow you’re so lucky! I’m DEFINITELY envious :frowning: Congrats! I got rejected w/ a 3.78 and very good ECs and a decent essay.
