Communications or Economics Major?

I am currently an Economics major at UCSD with a minor in film studies. I have recently been contemplating whether I should change my major to Communications. Although UCSD has a prestigious Economics program, I know many Economic graduates who could not find jobs after they graduated and are stuck with jobs that they could have got even if they didn't go to college. I don't know much about the Communications department at UCSD but I believe it is a different and more versatile route to take. Plus, my goal is to become a studio executive or an independent producer so I believe taking the Communications route is the best way to go. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you were an Econ major because there’s a stigma that it is correlated with “success” and it sounds like you genuinely are more interested in Communications. You should take a class to see if you like it. If you do then I think you should switch majors because that seems more directed towards your goal in life.

Sounds like you wanna major in communications, which is what you should do. But econ probably presents more job opportunities, just so you know.

I recommend econ. It’s correlated with success.

Thanks for all the suggestions but as I have recently found out, there are not that many opportunities for economics like people think there are. I know many people who struggled to find any kind of job after graduating with an Economics major. And it’s true I’m majoring in Economics because of it correlating with success but I am starting to believe that it isn’t worth it if I am not that interested in the major.

Darren, currently there arent many opportunities for anyone. The unemployment rate is above ten percent. Just because you know a couple people who havent found jobs as econ majors in the worst job market in 26 years doesnt mean economics is a bad choice. If its the major that just doesnt interest you thats fine, do something else. But dont fool yourself into thinking that communications is going to open more doors for you, because statistics dont agree. Check out the links below, or just type in “best college majors”, “highest paying majors”, “most in demand majors”, and you will see econ is much more in demand, and higher paying than comm.

I dont think you should rely on anecdotal evidence, maybe you should quantify what skills do you learn from Economics and Communications.

Personally, I have never really figured out what people in Communications do, which makes it seem to me that they are beating around the bush when it comes to listing what they teach you because they don’t really do anything. If this is not the case, can someone please tell me what they do so that I can finally know =D

I do know however, that an economics major teaches you a lot of skills that, with the right networking, can land you a respectable job. I believe the key is being active in partaking in internships and other programs which would make you more marketable to employers, or perhaps land you a job with the company you interned with after you graduate (given you performed well).

That’s all I got, coming from a HS senior and extensive research on CC haha.

And agreed with USMC0311. Economy is crap right now, so keep that in mind.

That’s amazing that I have almost the same goal and majors matter as you…but now it’s turn to me to find out what I should major or minor, or double comm and econ in major… I wonder what’s going on with your major? Give me some suggestions. Thanks in advance :)
