I am a prospective communications major and was wondering how the program is there. UMass is my financial and academic safety, but I don't want to compromise a solid education for a lower price--can anyone offer some insight on the topic?

Thank you

Hi there,

My second major is communications, I would say the communication program is a good program but it has a theory based approach and not a technical approach. So I would supplement your communication major with a second major like marketing if your looking towards production based communications. So it’s defiantly worth the money just take advantage of the other opportunities there are at umass to supplement your career goals.

Thanks - that’s good to know. However, I’m not really into the technical aspect anyways; I’m not positive what I want to do yet but I’m pretty sure it’s not production. Marketing does sound interesting though and I might look into that.

My daughter attended UMass Amherst for her first year of college. First semester she had her major as Communications. Second semester she changed to Journalism. She decided that the journalism courses weren’t as detailed as she would have liked. She then transferred to Emerson and is thrilled with the program. Please make sure the college offers what you want. Otherwise you would have wasted 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars. My son also attended UMass Amherst and knew what he wanted. He thoroughly investigated the biochemistry program and classes. He is very happy there.
