Communications Programs?

I've noticed there are a lot of posts on this board about science- and math-based graduate programs, but practically none about communications programs. Any advice on communications masters programs? Specifically, I'm looking at schools in Washington, DC, but am open to hearing suggestions about other programs, especially those that are more practical than theoretical (i.e. classes on public relations and speechwriting rather than classes on communications theory or research).

Also, one of the programs I've been considering is the Johns Hopkins communications program at their DC campus. Does anyone know anything about this program (selectivity, the institutional culture, etc)? I haven't been able to find too much information about it outside of the school's website.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Essentially you’re looking for a professional master’s, then? Not a thesis-based research program?

As a bit of forewarning, you will generally be expected to pay for such a program out-of-pocket. There will not be assistantships, etc. to fund your education.

I think so, since my undergrad degree was theory-based, and since I think learning and honing practical skills is more important to my ultimate career. The Johns Hopkins program seems to be similar to a professional masters, even though it does require a “thesis” (my understanding is that it’s essentially a major communications project at the end of the degree). I also know that George Washington University has some professional-type masters programs along the same lines.

As for cost, my employer is covering the cost of my advanced degree, so I’m looking at programs regardless of fellowships or other financial incentives.

I would suggest American and GW. Both have programs that offer practical communications courses that seem to meet your needs.

Hey everyone, I wish to apply for a graduate program in Journalism (Broadcast Journalism to be specific) for Fall’12. Can anyone kindly suggest me some good colleges in US, where i can intend on applying.
I’m very eager to apply for CUNY graduate school of Journalism and Walter Cronkite school (ASU). Your feedbacks are very needful.

Hey, I have noticed that you are pursuing with the exact plans i am,regarding going for a practical training in the graduate program. check out the CUNY graduate school of Journalism, their program is really good. They do require the thesis though. All the best.
