Communications: The Slacker Major?

So I'm going to be attending UCSD as a comm. major in the fall, but lately I've heard from different people that it's known as the "major of people that want to party/get trashed every week but still graduate." Also, I've heard that employment prospects after graduation are poor. So, I'm just wondering what your thoughts are. I know employment opportunities probably won't be as good as a bioengineering graduate, but poor?

I’ve never met an intelligent person who was majoring in communications.

Huh, where did you hear that it’s the “slacker major”? As for job opportunities after graduation, communication is very broad and can be applied to a lot of different things so I don’t expect you’d have a difficult time finding employment.

I love that site. I wish UCLA would make something similar. Similarly, I wish Berkeley would post the exact statistics of admitted transfers like UCLA does.

Well, in the last week, I’ve talked two people that both said comm. majors artificially inflate their school’s GPA lol. They also said most of the comm majors they know are total slackers, and that people in that major are often the slacker type. Then today, I ran across this page:

[The 10 Most Worthless College Majors](http://www.holytaco.com/2008/06/03/the-10-most-worthless-college-majors/</a>)

I know this isn’t a serious website, but there’s often some truth in humorous websites like this. Anyways, it’s not like I’m going to change the course of my life based on what two people and a website say…

Thanks for posting that link, I’ll check it out :)

It’s not just 2 people and a website. The vast majority of people have no respect for comm. majors. Hell even The Simpsons have no respect for you guys.

You probably should have chosen a major with better job prospects.

Honestly, it’s really up to you and however you decide to sell yourself and your major after graduating. You can tweak the major in any way you want during that job interview after you get your degree. I know my cousin just graduated as an Econ Major from UCR, and basically his interviewers have been asking him what his major was about. So if you decide to specialize in certain aspects of communications, take a couple classes that would back up what you want to do, and then sell it.

more worthless than womens studies? doubt that.

Oh wow, only 7% of Berkeley Mass Comm. majors are attending grad-school.

i think the real mystery here is the belief that your major = what you MUST do in life.

Did you see this one in the employment section?

University of California Berkeley Lifeguard

lol, went to Berkeley to be a lifeguard.

if you look at all the majors, a lot of the jobs are random.

Sodamoth… That’s a funny name.

Yeah, those statistics are created only from those who actually responded (as in the 7% to grad school number). And I think it’s safe to assume some took it as a joke and listed random jobs. I had a look through the other majors and saw some pretty funny “jobs” listed.

Then, why the hell is Comm the most diffcult major to land in at UCLA?? I am convinced that Comm is worth such a crazy competition after all.

I saw some…interesting ones, too. Which ones did you find funny?
