Communications: The Slacker Major?

They don’t call communications an “M-R-S” degree for no reason.

It’s for girls waiting for their (the following is sarcasm) shining knight to come save them from their tower of labor and casual sex.

Given, i do think there are some comm majors out there with actual intentions to do something with it afterwards. But i think some of the motivated people were misguided in terms of their major.

Love your major? Well, that’s fantastic. I guess that’s all we can do, love what we learn.

Posts like this peeve me greatly.

If you’re genuinely interested in studying the way people communicate with one another - if you get excited reading the course catalog for your prospective major - then what do you care what others say?

I’ll admit I’m prejudiced - I was a Comm Studies major at UCLA back in the day. I found my classes (in psychology, sociology, law) fascinating, graduated magna cum laude (with a 4.0 in my major), and was accepted out of college into a highly selective apprenticeship program in the film industry (15 out of 3,000 applicants accepted).

As one poster mentioned, it’s very difficult to get admitted to the Comm Studies major at UCLA these days - you apply as a rising junior, and if your GPA’s less than 3.5, the committee won’t even look at your application. If it’s less than 3.7 or 3.8, you’d probably better have a plan B. Don’t sound like slackers to me.

Maybe because it’s so easy that anything less than a 3.7 looks pathetic. lol I kid, I kid.
