Can anyone list the schools with some of the top communications programs? I searched around on the internet and couldn't really find anything. Please help!

The best school for communications are Northwestern, BU, Syracuse, GW, NYU, USC and University of Missouri.

I personally think the big city schools are better than the more rural schools when planning on this major. Syracuse's program IMO is kind of overrated due to the celebrity alums. Also, Syracuse is not exactly the best city for amazing internships, which are very important if you plan on going into journalism. The big city schools oftentimes offer professors who actually WORK in the field in addition to teaching.

try this

Northwestern University! The oldest Comm school in the country!

That list isn't really good to go by if you want to get into journalism, filmmaking, PR, or advertising. Most people who are looking for a communications program don't want the rhetoric side of things.

The one I posted has all the subareas of communications.

Bowling Green's good for rhetoric (27th on Barron's link)

Syracuse has one of the best communications schools around. And contrary to what CityGAl stated above, Syracuse has plenty of internships available all around the country. Lots of internships with major publications in NYC/DC and throughout the nation. And a great alumni network to boot...

HSP, is there a particular communications area that you are interested in? It's a broad field, and different colleges group different disciplines under that heading. Advertising, Public Relations, Broadcast Journalism, Film, Mass Communication, Speech, Media Studies, etc. are just a few of the things that can get thrown into a school of communications.

If your interest is broadcast communications, I'll add a suggestion to the excellent ones already made above: Ball State University. We toured their facilities a few years ago, and their broadcast infrastructure was truly top-notch - better than some commercial stations, and better than some bigger name schools. (Alum David Letterman has been generous over the years.) The faculty seemed to have plenty of real-world experience. The prof that took us around had spent 14 years with CNN, much of it on international assignment.

They just opened a $40 million media research center, too.

For communications, perticularly journalism, brodcasting, and mass communications, what school would you look for in the Boston area? By this I mean could you rate/rank these? I have two friends in NYC that i'm bringing up here to visit schools.

Also, would you say BU's communication's is better than Emerson's? It's perticularly hard to tell when so many of Boston's anchors, including 1/3 of FOX Newsteam, is from Emerson.

All I know is that there are programs at;

Boston University
Emerson
Boston College
Northeastern
MIT (niether will ever get in there, but commentary is nice)
Suffolk
Emmanuel College

Out of the schools you listed, BU and Emerson are so far superior to the others that your friends may as well not bother looking at them. I mean, really, MIT? For journalism? No way.

The other schools might have communication programs, but definitely not strong ones. I looked at BC, and their communication program is very weak.

Not sure about any of the other schools but I haven't heard of any of them having very good programs, and I looked at every school with a program worth mentioning.

When ranking BU or Emerson as higher...I'd have to say HANDS DOWN BU. Emerson has a very strong program, but because all its majors are concentrated in the media/com area, the student can't really get a well-rounded education. Any good journalist needs a strong liberal arts background, which Emerson can't really provide. Since BU has a hundred different majors, kids the com program must take lots of different classes to graduate. It seems like Emerson kids are all about learning how to work a camera.

BU also has a waaaay more college experience. There are major teams, clubs, different types of people, etc. Basically everyone at Emerson is it for the same thing, which is okay if that's what you're looking for.

hello guys! I'm also interested in communications more specifically tv/film/radio
Now my question is that major related to acting?i saw on this website http://www.uncwil.edu/stuaff/career/Majors/communication.htm >i'm interested in acting but i do not want to major in theater or drama...My second question is it possible to major in comm and do i minor in geography(my second passion)?

?????????????????
