So it's pretty much not needed if I'm submitting my common app essay?
Can i write it anyway just for kicks?

Though the communities essay is not needed for those applying with the Common Application, the Admissions Committee does welcome the submission of that communities essay. Though there is no specific preference stated, and one’s chances do not increase if they submit the communities essay, I will say that I personally prefer reading responses to our JHU essays over the bland Common App. essay prompts.
