Communitiy Service Scholarship

Okay, now that the DHSs have been awarded and all that didn't receive one now know, let the waiting for the Community Service Scholarship notifications begin. Wondering who out there has applied for this scholarship and what your/your child's stats are. It is my understanding that they make awards anywhere from $5,000-$15,000. I emailed our admissions counselor the other day and she said that the notifications go out mid-March. Anybody have any examples of students who have received a CCS and what kind of credentials they had? (in addition to the obvious involvement in community service). I've heard the story about one student who started a health clinic over in Africa a few years ago, but other than that, I'd love to know what type of student receives an award. I'll throw my own child's information out there and if anybody has any insight, I'd love the feedback.

D is president of her service club at school and has expanded the membership and gotten her club involved with and providing support for several new organizations. Examples are providing support for fundraising walks/runs like the Race For the Cure, involved with programs at the YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, and other fundraising events.

involved with an organization that is separate from her school service that one Sunday a month provides meals and fellowship to homeless citizens. She is also head of their major fund-raiser this year, an auction/fashion show that helps raise a great deal of money for this program.

Attended a language immersion/community service program in Ecuador last summer for a month. Earned approximately 135 hours of service credit.

In addition to her service club requirements (15 hrs./qtr, but much more since she is president this year), she has volunteered for the last 4 years, once a week, at a hispanic outreach center that provides after-school tutoring for elementary aged children.

Volunteers with an organization that helps raise money for AIDS Orphans in Africa through jewelry making.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Just trying to get an idea of she has a shot or not. Thanks so much!

If she doesn’t have a shot, who does?

Well, that is kind of you to say. Thanks. But, the one thing that I have learned through all of this college/Tulane process is that there are SO many qualified students out there in every way. You just never know about these things. Would love to hear about anybody else that has applied for this scholarship if they are willing to share their information.

i applied this year as well, as i took a gap year before beginning my freshman year at tulane to volunteer in columbia, sc.

i was co founder of a bike club at my high school, was a buddy and coach for TOP Soccer 16 wks/yr for 8 years, volunteered at a YMCA camp for 3 summers, and assisted counselors at a christian camp for 3 weeks one summer, helped fundraise for a ronald mcdonald house regularly, worked in a local seattle homeless shelter, and am currently serving as a city year corps member (1700 hours of community service over the course of 10 months).

good luck to you! hopefully we’ll all receive some good news in a few short weeks!

What a great thing cneelz taking a gap year. Isn’t City Year out of Boston? Our old soccer coach was very involved with that program. Really great. I’d say you’re a prime candidate for a CSS, but I don’t make the decisions. I emailed our Ad. Coun. and she said that the decisions would go out mid-march. Good luck to you, too!

I’ve heard within a week or so we’ll hear!! Can’t wait. And yes, City Year was founded in Boston, but now there are 20 sites in the U.S. and one in South Africa. Let me know if you hear anything!

Will do. Good luck!
