The residence hall that I have been placed in only has community bathrooms. How are they set up, especially the showers and toilets? Is there any privacy? Its $14000 a year to stay in the dorms so im hoping they arent cheap-looking. On the website, it says that they will be cleaned daily. I will be at Marymount Manhattan de Hirsh in nyc if anybody is familiar with it

Communal bathrooms obviously differ from building to building, but generally they look like a standard public bathroom with a row of showers. Comparable to locker room-type bathrooms, I guess. In general, dorm bathrooms are likely to be gross, or at least dingy, unless your building is brand-new, and even if they are cleaned daily. Wear shoes in the shower and you’ll be fine.

It really depends on how new and nice your dorm is. I lived in a dorm first semester that was pretty old, and the bathrooms were old, but clean. Think your basic public bathroom, but with shower stalls. I lived in a newer dorm second semester and it was similar, but nicer. The shower stalls had little changing rooms in them which I liked, whereas in the old one it was just a normal shower curtain. But yeah, definitely wear flip-flops in the shower. You definitely get used to it, but you’ll be happy when you don’t have to deal with community bathrooms again :)

I laughed out loud

Then I fell out of my chair

A community bathroom at UB has 2 toilets, 2 sinks and 2 showers. Toilets and sink and floor were mopped/washed daily to every other day and then the showers were washed twice a week.

Expect it to be old but the stall doors will shut and lock and there will be curtains on the showers. Don’t expect a bathroom attendant, fancy soap, absorbent paper towels or double ply toilet paper.

Lol @ Yakyu

Yea what everyone said is pretty true. That 14 grand price tag though is shocking, I guess because its in NY, higher cost of living/land?

At UT Austin I think the most expensive room you can POSSIBLY get is a single person dorm with a personal bathroom in the flashiest building on campus, and thats like 12k, lol.

You get used to it after a while. I’ve always had my own bathroom and was frustrated by having a community bath for a couple of weeks, but after that I didn’t even care. And my dorm was by no means a luxury dorm.

And, yes, OMG, $14,000? o_O

$14,000? Is that without a meal plan too? Geez… Well, hopefully it’ll be alright. Even if you live in a new building, the bathrooms get disgusting. I live in one of the newest buildings on a floor of about 23 people, and our bathrooms get GROSS. They’re cleaned on the weekdays, but even then they can still get pretty bad. We’re a coed floor and we share bathrooms with both genders, so sometimes the girls complain that the guys make the bathrooms nasty. However, in my experience, I found that girls are the worst: leaving black and brown blotches of makeup on the sinks, leaving hair in the shower/sink drains, mishaps with feminine products (seriously, sometimes people don’t clean up after themselves!), and of course I’ve also noticed that girls are the ones who are most likely to be puking in/on/around the toilets after parties.

So, it’s not going to be very glamorous, but you do your part cleaning up and it’ll be fine. Also, don’t leave passive-aggressive notes in the bathroom…people who do that are forever hated. It’s a disgusting place, but it’s tolerable. You’ll learn to deal with it.
