community college during a gap year

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if it's possible to be accepted to a university, defer admission for a year, and during that year work and take classes at a community college? I looked all over but couldn't really find any answers to this specific question. The colleges I'm thinking about specifically are University of Michigan and USC.

You can defer admissions to most private schools ( and usually they are happy about it) but many publics do not allow it. You need to apply all over to, for example, Ohio State, if you want to do a gap year.

You can take courses of course for your own benefit but you can’t use them for credit at the school you eventually go to- unless- you reapply as a transfer student.

My daughter is doing this very thing this year.

Taking classes at a community college may change your status at the 4 year school to being a transfer student. Be very cautious and check the schools rules, especially if you have any merit scholarship hopes. The difference between freshman scholarships and transfer scholarships can be huge (transfer scholarships are generally much lower). At my daughters 4 year state schools students with any AP credits were strongly cautioned that even taking CC classes in the summer between graduating HS and starting in the fall could cause them to become transfer students and lose freshman scholarships they had been awarded. This would depend on the school, so check with the school.

Ok thanks a lot. I’d be applying there as a transfer student. I guess I won’t take them if I get in.

It would be a shame if you skipped taking courses of interest because of possible college rules that would affect you.

Just because a student takes “AP” courses doesn’t mean they should be placing out of college courses. And similarly there may not be a need to take courses at the CC or an “adult extension” of a local college for “credit”. You can possibly audit them without triggering some rule.

Keeping active academically would help in transitioning back after the gap year.

I encourage you to ask your college of interest what is possible during a gap year.

I’ll echo what has already been said; you need to check with the particular school that you plan on attending and get an answer in **writing/b. You don’t want to get this wrong and have just a justification of “well, the voice who answered the phone said it was ok.”
