Hi,
I'm currently in high school (entering 11th), and I recently took a community college course. I am wondering if the grade I got there will count towards my high school GPA.
Also, will colleges see this grade I got in the college, or will they only see it as "credit"/passed?
The reason I'm asking this is because I got a B in this class (community orchestra), which is quite pathetic for a class in music (and I don't want them to see it if it's possible). The reason I have this grade is because I missed more than half of the rehearsals and couldn't make it to the concert (for legit reasons, and of course I talked to him upfront about it before signing up for the class).
I will continue to take classes there at the college (other music courses as well as some other, this time showing up at every rehearsal/lecture), and so I'm going to definitely want to transfer credits to the University that I will go to. Can you selectively choose which courses appear on your transcript?

To sum things up my real question is: How does dual-enrollment work and how does it tie into your high school GPA?

Thank you so much for your help.

You need to talk to your counselor about this, because I think it varies from school to school. At my school, for instance, no community college course is recognized by my school, simply because they haven't formally approved the curricula. What I think happens is, you report on your app that you took CC courses, and then you have that CC send a transcript -- that is, if you want them to recognize that you took those courses. However, I don't think the grades you get in them have any effect on your highschool GPA.

I don't think you can choose which courses show up on the transcript, but you'll have to talk with your counselor about it.

It depends on the school. I have taken multiple dual enrollment courses during HS, and my school gives me credits and lists them on my transcript, but just gives me a grade of PASS. However, when I apply to college, I will send my College Transcript to the college along with my HS one. Then they can see the grades I got in those classes (4.0 yay!).

Thanks for your answers.
So does this mean that my "real" college GPA (when I'm a college student), will be affected by the classes I'm taking now?

That would be on the college you attend and if you want them to know. I had 30 hours of college credit that I took at my high school through a community school nearby. But my college wouldn't take it because i didn't take it at the community college with other community college students. And the college you go to would only know about the classes you take if only you want them to transfer the credit, in which you have to provide a transcript. So if you don't want them to know or apply it to your requirements, then you simply don't mention it.

so does that mean I can choose which credits I want transferred?

My son's dual enrollment credits from community college were accepted by his college provided they were for courses which the college also taught - for instance - psychology 101, sociology 101, and the like. They do not accept music, p.e.,art, vocational (cad design for instance), or foreign language. So check with the college of your choice and meet with the adcom. Personally, I would just chalk up that B in orchestra to experience. If you later take Psych and get an A, put it in your transcript.
