Hey CC,
I'm from Melbourne, but i've been thinking of going over to the US and studying in a community college for the first 2 years before transferring over to a 4-year institution. Are there any difficulties an international student will face in term of transferring? Will it be hard for me to go to a CCC and transfer to UCB or UCLA? Thanks in advance all.

I met a girl from Germany at my CC last semester doing exactly what you are thinking of doing. She took a year or two of classes at the CC and will be transferring to a 4 year university next year. I think she saved a few thousand dollars doing it. The only difficulty I know of that she had was that in order to even apply to the 4 year uni, she had to prove that she had all of the money in the bank - up front - for the time she would be at the 4 year uni. This was a CSU, not sure if private schools would require the same, but it may have something to do with student visa requirements. I would imagine that UC would either have the same rule or something different, but you should be able to transfer. (To be honest though, I don't know why she didn't consider a private school, the cost for her to attend CSU is just about the same!)

Well, as an international student you won't get priority admission at UCs even though you attend a CCC. So you'll be at a disadvantage compared to CA residents. However, I'm not saying it's not possible. if you want to go to UCLA/UCB it probably still is the best way.

Thanks for the replies so far. As an international student studying in a state community college, will I be considered "higher priority" than out-of-state transfers and international (studying in another country atogether) transfers?

You should post this thread in the UC transfer section as you will get a lot of information if you are planning to attend a California Community College and transferring to a UC school.
