community college grade from high school when transfering...

I took a 1st semester chemistry class at a local community college during the summer when I was in high school and received a B. Currently I'm a student at a community college as a Biology major, and I was wondering if that grade will be included in my transfer GPA.

Also, does it affect my chances of being accepted if I stay at a community college for 3 years (instead of 2) then transfer as a junior? I find it easier to spread out my classes since I have so many requirements to cover, and I want to make sure I get good grades in all of them.

Thank you!

Lots of people take more than two years to complete an AA or AS degree. Make an appointment with the transfer counselor at your CC, and ask what they know about your target colleges and universities.

Good luck!

If you took the course during high school at the same CC you’re at now, it should still be a part of your cumulative GPA.

Now, 3 years at CC isn’t bad, but do your research about transferring. Some colleges prefer you to fulfill X amount of credits at their institution to graduate, or to graduate with certain honors. For example, when I transferred to my final school (where I earned my degree), they only transferred a certain number of courses (the ones not transferred were mostly art courses and one personal money management course that apparently wasn’t relevant to anything there). I needed to have a certain number of credits taken at my final school (I couldn’t just go there for 1 semester and graduate with my degree, even if my requirements were filled). And you needed a certain amount of credits at that final college to have summa/magna/cum laude on your transcript, even if you had excellent grades at your previous institution (the GPA itself does not transfer).

Also, if you are spreading out your courses you want something else going on so it doesn’t look like you’re taking an easy ride. Extracurriculars, or if you need to work nearly full-time, stuff like that to reference when you apply to transfer.

Thank you so much to both of you! I have an appointment with my counselor tomorrow, so I’ll see how it goes. I should really be more active if i’m going to spread my classes out. Thanks a lot!!
