I am a senior in Highschool . I did poorly in my freshman and sophomore year that I can not compensate it with my good grades in junior and senior year . GPA of 2.1 , SAT 1300/2400 . It seem like no 4 yr colleges would accept me and I did not bother applying for any. Therefore my only solution is going to a community college . Community college is not a bad idea . I can save tons of money. Furthermore , I can boost my GPA during these 2 years . But, my Asian parents, my dad disapprove of me going to a community college . He thinks it's shameful. And that he will lose his face among his friends . Do you think I made a stupid decision of not applying for college and going to a community college ? Should I be ashamed of going to a communit college ?

No you should not be ashamed your dad cannot choose you future. And you should Also apply to regular colleges to see if you will get in. Good luck

No, you shouldn’t be ashamed if you end up at a community college. It gets a pretty bad rep in these forums and amongst Asians (I’m Asian, so I know…) but there are many reasons people attend community college, not just “being a failure” which is what I get told by my mom. At my local community college where I take a class, I do see a sizable number of Asians.

That said, I don’t think it’s too late to apply for colleges besides community college. I don’t know what state you’re in, but you could try for your state flagship or something.

Uh wait, how do you have a SAT 1300/2400?

I am not a good test taker and it was my first time taking it .

Oh… I thought you meant that Math + CR was 1300 in the 2400 SAT score.

You would have a chance at better four-year universities if you went to a community college and transferred. The four-year universities you could get into at this point probably aren’t all that good.

Agreed completely with Heather. Try bringing that up with your parents; if you tried to go to a four-year now, it probably wouldn’t be a very good one, and if it was, you would rack up a lot of debt. By going to a community college and transferring, you can receive scholarships and a much better degree.

Believe it or not, community college is not a bad thing. It’s a cheaper alternative that is easier to get in to, and, as others have said, you can transfer to a university from there.
