Community college math classes FML

So I am attending Santa Monica College and started this semester (Spring 2010). I was placed into some low math classes (Math 20/Math32) which are intermediate algebra/geometry (FML, yes I took these in 9/10 grade of high school).

Now because of math classes, I have to spend at least 2 years in community college just to get these math pre-requisites out of the way for me to transfer.

The list looks like this-

Right now I am taking math 20 which is intermediate algebra.
I was wondering what are some ways to get these math pre-req's done faster? Thank you

if you can, try and do the placement tests again to see if you will place higher. If not then you just need to grind it out. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already tried taking it two times and both times placed into the lower division math classes.
Do you know if it is possible to take Math 32 at SMC, then take Math 2 at some other college like LACC or something during the summer?

Then take math 7 during the fall

Thanks again for your reply

@smcpaul

if you feel confident about taking it once more, take the placement test at a different college, and if you place higher, take your first math course there, then transfer your transcripts back over to your original college and follow through from there.

Better than De Anza’s math course. We have 2 precal classes to take in order to get to calculus. My advice for you is so study some trig and precal for a few weeks before you take the placement test for calculus.

smcpaul, i was in a similar situation. my weakness is math.

what i did was get a tutor to help me study the practice placement test, and made the tutor make me a bunch of questions just like the placement test.

i passed and placed to the math transferable level.

I also go to SMC. A lot of students at SMC who place at low level math classes usually takes it at UCLA extension. I heard math classes at UCLA extension are a lot easier than the ones at SMC. The only con about taking the class at UCLA is: are you willing to shell out $480+ dollars for a math class?

@smcpaul I was in a similar position but with me I had all my other pre reqs finished but my math. My counselor told me about these online math classes I can take through Barstow Community College which is more accelerated and are only 9 weeks long. Goto bcconline.com to check it out. Hope it helps

@vintagesoul & janethedoe- preach on, brothers! That’s exactly what I did when I placed in college algebra- took the test, got into Stats 1, and only had to take 1 math class.

SMCPaul, I assume you have to go much higher than Stats though, huh?

imma a girl lol, but yeah!!! fight the system and get on with your life, Stats was an easy A!!! woot woot.

but i attempted another math and failed, so maybe if you have to take “harder” math its important to get a refresh.

It might be too far out of the way just for a math class, but if you can prove that you passed Algebra 2 in high school with at least a ‘C’ Moorpark College will place you into UC/CSU transferable math classes.

I took the placement test at SMC,i studied my ass off for that placement test just so i could just place into a transferable math course. Try brushing up on the things you took in high school, or taking a few math lessons and then taking the test again. I was bad at math and had horrible, horrible math teachers in high school and I still managed to place into Stats. And a statistics course(in my opinion) is wwaaayy better/easier than the other math options out there.

i’m pretty sure u can petition to take a UC transferable math course and overrule ur placement test. at my cc u just have to fill out a form and talk to the guy in charge (usually the dean of the math department; but at my cc it’s just a math professor)

Get a tutor and study for the test. When you place into a higher class, go to the SMC math lab for free tutoring on a regular basis. It’s good! I used to tutor there!

makes me glad I tested into calculus1 when i was 16
