Community College or a decent University?

Hello !! I received a low score on the SAT (1730) for the schools I want to go to, so I have been wondering what would be better. I really want to go to a UC school, but in the case that I do not get accepted to any UC. Would it be better to go to community college and transfer after two years? Or go to a school like University of Oregon or University of Colorado Boulder, etc. ? My major is computer science.

I have 1730 SAT and 3.9 UC GPA, I really want to go to UCSB! I was extremely involved in school activities, had a difficult class schedules while being in marching band and sports, and I have a lot of leadership, so I think ECs, Awards and Essays would help my chances.

I would do CC for 2 years but I am only a freshmen so…

Cost will be very different between the two options. 2 yrs @ CCC living at home, then 2 yrs of IS tuition vs. 4 yrs of OOS tuition.

Costs isnt really the factor, its more experience wise and academics overall. CC or ok University?

If the “college experience” is very important for you (and cost really isn’t a factor–ask your parents), start with a university. You can always transfer from the OOS school to a UC.

You did/will apply to schools like SJSU as safeties right? (are you a high school junior or senior now?)

Although SJSU may not be as rigorous as the top UCs in terms of amount of stuff in each course, it is still good for CS (and you could take more courses per semester if you find them not rigorous enough), and in a good location for internship and post-graduation recruiting.

No, i didnt apply to SJSU but i did apply to safeties like Oregon.

What schools were in your application list?

For out of state, schools like Minnesota and Virginia Tech would be worthy choices due to low cost and good reputation. Not sure why you would pick Oregon for CS over those (or SJSU).

In any case, if you are considering community college in California, take a look at [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) to see what courses you need to take to transfer as a junior in CS to a UC or CSU.

Students do go from community college to UCs like Berkeley, do well, and go on to PhD study or good employment afterward. (However, CS at Berkeley is a tough transfer, because few community colleges have more than 0 or 1 of the lower division CS courses, which would mean doing a lot of “catch up” after transfer.)

Any more opinions out there??

Ok i will look into other cs schools
