What are the chances of me getting into a decent university to finish off my junior and senior years? I know gpa and mcat scores are what matters the most as a premed student but I would also like to transfer to a good university.

I am currently a 3.0 gpa premed(biology) student at a community college planning to apply to UCLA, USC, UCI, etc. But what are my chances at these schools? I have attended CC for 3 years so far and I have turned my college life around. Once upon a time hardly would I even consider to pursue the path of medicine. I was faced with a 2.4 gpa student beginning my second year at a cc. But since then, I have managed to improve my gpa to a 3.0 with mostly core classes. My gpa for the past year 3 semesters have all been 3.5's and all science courses with the exception of two english classes. I unfortunately though received a C in my past intersession where I simply bit off more than I could chew. Aside form that, I currently have 1 student research on my resume as well as 1 other currently in progress. I have also been working part-time over 2 years and recently took on another part-time job (which is why i have averaged 8-10 units my past 3 semesters). With that all said, I just wanted to test the waters as to what my chances are to be admitted into a university(UCLA) where I may continue my pursuit for medical school.

You may want to ask on the pre-med forum if there is any realistic chance of getting your GPA up to medical school minimums; if not, you need to plan the rest of your school for some alternative besides medical school. Even if there is a possibility, you probably do want to have backup plans, since most pre-meds do not get into any medical school.

You should be talking with the xfer counselors at your school who are much more familiar with the requirements and so on than the average random internet poster is going to be. And you can go to the UCLA admissions website to read the info they post about xfer admissions.

As a PreMed student at a cc as well, I’ve had the same questions. Focus on transferring to a 4 year first for your bachelors, then worry about med school because you’ll have counselors at the UC of your choice. That’s what Ana Rafferty of UCB told me.

Note: Your title asked for Transfer Help, but wound up just being a Chance thread. In the future, please don’t make an entirely new thread asking the same questions as 32038 other people in this forum.

Also, you will most likely not get into UCLA or USC as a bio major with a 3.0 (and very iffy at UCI) no matter your personal circumstances. Not to deter you from your dream, but please consider additional schools.

Sorry to say this but just give up pre med with that GPA and going to CC. You are pretty much done for any med school in the united states. Besides med schools don’t like it if you took pre med courses at CC so thats another thing your at a disadvantage with.

Sadly I have to say you probably don’t have a chance for UCLA. However, I do say could try to go for mid-tier UC’s. For med school, I wouldn’t worry too much as to which school you should go to for undergrad as long as you have the qualifications for med school. I say, it may be a benefit to you if you go for a less prestigious school since it may cost less and you could get more resources from which ever college you go to. Then again, you should attempt any ways to apply for UCLA since you do claim extra curricular activities. they will read that and possibly get in.

Thank you guys for your helpful and honest advices!

And to PsychBruin2012 my current science gpa is 3.0. I still need to take another year of calc, physics, ochem and 1 semester of biology.

I am also considering to apply for Environmental Science instead of biology. Hopefully that may slightly benefit my chances since I am just as much interested in that.

@ Choco: You don’t have to major in a science major for med school. You can be a music, history, psychology, anthropology, humanities, or even a dance major if you wanted. It might be easier… Good luck!
