How hard is it to transfer to Georgia Tech as an out of state student majoring in Aerospace Engineering? I looked at their transfer requirements and I have completed 3 of the 6 required courses so far, and will actually complete the rest of them next semester. I have a current GPA of 3.7, I took Calc 3(got a B), English 100(got an A), Intro Physics and Chem(A in both). I’m taking General Chem 1, Linear, Philosophy(fills my English requirement here, not sure about Georgia), and Calc based Physc 1. I just found out the dead line for Georgia Tech for the summer of 2019 is January 15, do you think I can apply based on my standings and get in now? It’s only my first year, and I would love to transfer as soon as possible.
I just checked the transfer articulations, and all I have to complete is Genereal Chem 1, Linear and Differential, Engineering Physics. If I maintain a high GPA this semester in those classes, do I have a good chance of getting in?
Bigger question is, can you afford GT out of state, compared to in state public universities?
Yes, and I also applied for financial aid and scholarships
There are no scholarships for transfer students from out of state at GaTech. They don’t have financial aid for out of state applicants, they offer Zell Miller awards to in state students, that cover 100% of their tuition. There are almost no scholarships at all for any out of state students. (about 20-40 get in state tuition but thats not open to transfer students,) You will need to stick to one major as well, but I do know a student in your situation who successfully transferred to GaTech. Be careful as it may take you four more years in aerospace to get a bachelors degree. Can you afford four more years? The reason is, that you will not have priority the first semester to sign up for any aerospace classes, and they will expect you to take humanities and social sciences and maybe one math class, which will slow you down on making progress in your degree program, possibly. They will look at your ACT/SAT from high school, your GPA in the required college classes, and the rigor of your classes, and they will want your final grades from community college, so you will not know if you will get in, until June or July, possibly, so you must make other plans like apply to U of California schools too. GaTech waits until the very last second to let in transfer students, because they want to see who drops out from the year before and they only take the number they have space for.
Wanting to start in the summer will be VERY helpful, as GaTech wants to fill up summer enrollments. It seems you might be on track to transfer, but hard to say, as it depends on how many students leave aerospace engineering and how many try to transfer in. Apply and see what happens. They do accept a fair number of transfer students in many fields, even computer science. you will not be able to change majors though, once you get to GaTech, as I understand it.
@Coloradomama Would applying for the summer start be helpful for undergraduate admissions as well?
@blazinamazin2023 There is a blog about GaTech admissions on another on line blog, (famous one starting with R)
A Gatech student has a step by step guid to admission on there, and he said that especially for Georgia kids,
those that sign up for summer school it will get them a spot. I imagine OOS it may help a little bit.
