If I take classes at a community college over the summer. Will the grade that I get count for my UCSD GPA? Or only for credit?? Thank you

u get the credts, but not the gpa.

I’m wondering this too. I’ve taken cc classes throughout high school.

xlemonpie is correct

so theoretically, getting a C in a communitycollege class would be the same as getting an A in that class when it comes down to transferring these credits to UCSD?

No, UCSD will see that C, and you’ll get the corresponding number of credits/units,
but it wont be factored into your GPA at all.

Also, if you apply to grad school, they will see the C and it wont factor that well into your application.

they only see the C from a community college if you send them the transcript … which i never did and which they never asked for.

Oh. I didnt know that. Thanks astrina.

waittt… so if I sent my college transcript, Grads school will see my B in Eng1A?

But i thought u guys said that they dont count it towards ur GPA? So wat’s the point of showing the grade on transcript?

Oh grad school doesn’t necessarily ask for your community college transcript? That’s great news! I’ve gotten a fair share of bad grades over here…

I think I’d better clarify my post – if you only took a FEW courses at a CC (ones that aren’t exactly pertinent to the discipline for which you’re going to grad school), they won’t ask because they won’t notice. Their official stance is that you give them all transcripts from all schools attended. BUT if you’re a transfer student and have two years’ worth of CC credits in your name, then you would need to send them along, because it’s hard to hide half of your classes, y’know?

My case specifically: applied for PhD programs in biochemistry. My CC courses consisted of humanities replacements and statistics. They couldn’t have cared less.

@poonpoon – either you’re misreading the earlier posts or I don’t understand what you’re saying. Grad schools only see the grades you have sent to them. If Eng1A is a CC course and you didn’t arrange for them to receive your transcript, then there’s no way in hell they’ll ever know. (Casual use of the term “college” may be a problem here – we don’t know whether you’re referring to a CC or UCSD.)

Damn it. Am I screwed then? My GPA from community college is at the very best 3.57 if I get all As from now until the end of summer. It’ll still be left with a bunch of Cs and Bs even after I retake my Ds and turn them into As which I plan to do…

Bah…

I mean Okay, I’ll get all As from now on, it’s just a matter of effort. But is it already too late? Does Grad school really care that much about a bunch of Bs and Cs? :(

I’m getting a bit worried now, can someone tell me if most grad schools would totally laugh at that and reject me? It’s a total of 102 semester units and a GPA of 3.578

Let’s assume I get all As at UCSD.

Grad schools (taken in the traditional sense of the word, schools granting masters and doctoral degrees) really don’t … AS LONG as you’re good enough in their field and have demonstrated this appropriately. For the sciences, you could really suck at English but if you have a stellar research record, awesome letters of rec, decent GRE scores, and demonstrate competence in your science classes, you’re in. (my overall GPA was a 3.47 but my science GPA was probably >3.7)

Professional schools (MD, JD, PharmD, DDS, DVM, you get the idea) typically have higher standards and wish you to be a smart applicant across the board.

(and hey! i got a C in PHIL102A as well – did you take that at Mesa?)

yeah I also wanna know bc I have taken 4 classes at the community college and have a 4.0, but I withdrew from a class and got a ‘W’. Does this have potential to hurt me later on?

Okay I know I’ve heard you say this before(your above comments on grad school that is), but I just wanted to hear it again to calm my nerves. Thanks astrina.

Would you recommend I retake my Bio210A that I got a C in then? I’m sure it could be arranged this summer if I willed it. (Given that I’ll be applying for behavioral neuroscience for grad school that is.)

(I did in fact take it at mesa. )
