Major: Philosophy at UCB, Psychology at UCLA
Pre-Reqs: UCB Philosophy has no articulated courses with my campus, but I've taken 6 philosophy classes. UCLA Psych pre-reqs are all finished.
GPA: 3.95
IGETC: yes
TAP: no
EC's: Founder and president of a philosophy club, work experience for 1.5 years, childrens music instructor, involved in the running of a music festival, received a few merit scholarships, presidents list, deans list, blah blah blah

My issue is that I botched my essays pretty badly. I thought the application would allow me to reedit them so long as it wasnt past the deadline, but I was wrong... UCLA took my revised ones, but UCB wouldnt let me change them. How badly do you think this will impact me? If I had to rate my UCB essays I'd give them like a 6/10

Your GPA alone should be a match for both. My sister got into UCLA with a 3.7 with a Psychology major but she says she had a solid essay(She was also a part of the TAP which I am sure helped). I have a 3.8 GPA and majoring in history and most people and counselors have told me my chances are good and my essay was approved by previous English professor.

My understanding is the essay part is quite important, there are a lot of students with great GPA’s but what separates them from the other students? That is getting to know them by reading their essay, so they say.

I would say, you will likely get into UCLA since they allowed you to fix your essay, and plus, you would rather go t o UCLA than go to Berkley, better campus, much better weather, more to do off-campus, UCLA still a prestigious school. Don’t stress it too much.

@Tik1127 Thanks for the input. Honestly I would love to have a chance to go to either of these schools. UCLA weather IS pretty amazing, I dont know how I would do up north with the bay area clouds.

In regards to my essays… Well, they simply aren’t very strong in conveying my best and most articulate self… They are disorganized, they don’t show very well why it is that I am pursuing the fields I am pursuing, and they have a few grammatical errors and awkward sentences here and there which I didn’t catch the first time around. I really had no excuse for not putting my best foot forward, I should have been more cautious before submitting.

I don’t think the essays will affect your admission that much! I think both of those schools are primarily focused on grades. Essays and extracurriculars are secondary. I think you may have better chance at UCB because there are sooo many transfers from Santa Monica College looking to go to UCLA. I think that philosophy isn’t that common of a major and they would have classes available. If they offer you a semester at Berkeley extension take it!!! Those classes are all transferable.
