Community college to University of Michigan ann arbor

Hi, I don’t wanna start out by giving excuses but I do wanna give a little explanation.

Nobody’s life is easy and I don’t think anyone has everything handed to them, but when I started high school things were getting really really bad with my family. They lost their small business, got in huge amounts of debt. For a winter I couldn’t stay at my home because we couldn’t afford to pay to keep it warm.

Due to these issues I never really thought I could ever amount to much and didn’t ever try in school. Eventually though, at the end of my sophomore year I absolutely fell in love with history and it changed my life. I love reading history books for fun and it made me care about my life and wanna do things and change the problems and issues we have in our country.

Starting my junior year my grades completely changed. Going up each semester, my last semester gpa for my first semester of senior year was a 3.5 with two AP classes and an honors course and I’m shooting for a 4.0 this semester. My family problems haven’t gotten better, I’m the only person in my family with a job and I support my family every pay check. I’m just better at handling it now.

My overall high school gpa is still very low though. Hovering around 2.6 or so I believe. I know I am going to need to go to community college first to recover my gpa. I do have a 31 on the act as well.

I’m just wondering if I want to transfer to U of M Ann arbor do you think I’ll need to do a full two years of community college before transferring or will I be able to maybe go earlier than that? Thank you ahead of time.

Probably yes, for them to look past your GPA. I have to say that a 3.5 and being the only person in your family with a job is super impressive. With that drive you can do a lot. Just check that the classes at community college transfer so you don’t end up with classes that don’t help. Most Michigan CC’s credits should transfer well.

Thank you. Being motivated and having supporting teachers helps tremendously. I was gonna talk to a councilor and Try to plan my schedule with the best courses in mind to transfer.
