Will taking my freshman and sophomore year of college at a community college and then transferring to a university affect my chances of getting into medical school? I know GPA will not transfer from the community college, but it is my only option for schooling because of recent family events and finances. Thanks :)

I know GPA will not transfer from the community college,

???

What do you mean by that? your GPA from the CC will count for med school admissions.

Generally when transferring, the grades from the previous school are not considered when the new school computes GPA.

However, like mom2 says—AMCAS will count every college level grade you ever have (even co-enrollment from high school, summer classes, CC credits, everything) when calculating your cum GPA and sGPA for medical school application.

Attending CC will not hurt chances provided: 1) you do well there–see above; 2) you take your medical school pre-reqs for Bio and OChem at a 4 year college after you transfer; 3) you do well at your 4 year college after you transfer.

Thank you! I’m only worried because I heard that it was looked down on by medical schools. I was in a lot of dual enrollment in high school but since I just graduated grades are not yet calculated. Using the syllabus I calculated my general chem and lab to be a B, which is not ideal, but we taught ourselves as the teacher was generally not qualified to teach the class and I attended a small school.

Never knock a teacher or an educational system in essays it makes you look bad!

CC credit is only frowned upon when a 4-year student goes backwards, doing CC credits instead of their home institution. It is very common for transfer students to take some, half even 75%-100% of their pre reqs at a CC, and remember the AMCAS counts ALL BCPM (Bio, Chem, Physics, Math) your prereqs are not seperated out from these. So as long as you take several 4-5 upper division courses at the 4-year… you are in good shape. (Take Physics at the CC level, non-calc based if possible, also take Calc 1 at CC).
