Community College Transfer

Hello, this is my first post so if I'm doing it wrong let me know :)

I am currently a sophomore at Mercer County Community College (Mercer County Community College - MCCC - West Windsor, NJ). This spring (2010) I will graduate with my Associates of Science in Business Administration. I am definitely planning to transfer to a four year university (a business program to be exact) and work toward my Bachelors. My goal is the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. I LOVE the University of Pennsylvania and Philly. I've visited multiple times, AND I have legacy status because of my Grandfather (He received his DDS from Penn many many moons ago).

Some other schools I'm interested in include:
Syracuse University (Except its FREAKIN FREEZING) - I've already had an interview
American University (I've already met an admissions counselor who said I could get in)
University of North Carolina
University of Southern California (I've completed part I of the application)
University of Virginia
Georgetown University
Northwestern University
Boston University/College
The College of New Jersey

I want a college with a "collegey" feel. I DO NOT like NYU. I like the idea of a small school (even tho I know most of those schools are relatively large), and strong community service, internship, and study abroad options are a MUST

Here are my college stats:

Grades:
Overall GPA : 3.76
Total Completed Credits: 60

As far as my business curricula and grades (I don't know if it matters, but most B-Schools have a prereq set for transfers and these are my grades in those classes)
Accounting (Financial) - A
Accounting (Managerial) - A
Business Law - A
Business Statistics I - A
Calculus I - A-
Macroeconomics (Honors) - A
Marketing - A

Academic Honors:
- Mercer's Honors Program - (Must take 12 credits before graduation to graduate from program, I will have taken 15).
- Who's Who of American Junior Colleges
- Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society Three Star Member - (Three Star means I am extremely active in the club, which includes community service, fundraising, fellowship, leadership, mentoring).
- Student Leader Award (Freshman Year)
- NJ Stars Scholarship Recipient

Letters of Rec:
I am very friendly with both the Dean and President of my college, my transfer counselor at MCCC is also the advisor for PTK.
Also, I am asking my Honors Econ and Business Stats teacher for a Rec, he's a Penn Alumni.

Extra Curricular:
- MCTV Student Run Live News Show: Reporter (Fall 2008), News Anchor (Spring and Fall 2009), Producer (Spring 2010) Approximately 5+ hours a week MCTV-26 Mercer County
- Phi Beta Lambta (Future Business Leaders of America for college kids) NJ State Competitor 2009: 3rd Place Public Speaking, 2nd Place Job Interview Approximately 1 hour a week
- Student Government Association Executive Board Parliamentarian (Freshman Year), Vice President (Sophomore Year). Being on the SGA board means I coordinate and volunteer at New Student Orientation, Open Houses, Student Appreciation Day, community service events every month, etc. I give about 10 hours a week to this club.
- Phi Theta Kappa: Community Service: Beach clean up, campus cigarette clean up, peer mentoring, etc

Work:
I also hold two jobs outside of school, I teach swim lessons and work on marketing promotions for two local gyms. I spend about 5-10 hours a week at each facility.

High School:
I know that the elite schools want to see your performance from high school as well so here are some ball park stats from my HS record.
Total Cum: High 3.8/4.5
(I think I ranked low 30's out of 350+ kids)
SATs:
Critical Reading 630
Math 610
Writing 570

What can I do to have a stronger application? Should I retake the SAT's? Should I take SAT II's?

I think you have a fighting chance at some of those schools, but for UNC-Chapel Hill (current transfer), you need to spend one semester in the College of Arts and Sciences and finish all of your prerequisites before you can be admitted to their school, which to be quite honest, IS HARD. They do not make the transition for transfers easy and I’m doubtful that I’ll be honest, a top business student at Miami (3.9 GPA) with honors and it’s been a rough semester at Carolina, hoping to crack a 3.0 GPA which I’m not even sure will be good enough to get me into the B-School. The Carolina way is just a lot different from many other colleges and people have a hard time adjusting right into it, but by second semester you have all the variables need to achieve in Carolina standards which is essentially a 3.3-3.5 GPA. So I’m not sure I’d recommend UNC if you would not want to change your major track. As for UVA McIntire, they take about 20 out-of-state applicants who are basically at the top schools at the top of your game, so it’s very hard to get into if you’re not a 4.0 applicant from UPenn, HYP. I know people with 4.0s who got denied from NYU Stern and Michigan Ross School of Business, just because McIntire is considered #1 for Undergrad now.

You say you want the university feel, but a smaller environment, so I’d suggest maybe some upper level privates such as Washington University and Emory. If you do not perform well in large lectures or interact well in large environments, I do not recommend a medium-large public like UNC.

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Thank you for your words of encouragement and good luck finishing out your semester!
