Community colleges in NYC

Alleyesonme17,

primero, You seem to be forgetting the fact that BMCC, NYU, & Columbia University all have their campuses scattered throughout NYC. NYU’s Woolworth building (you know, that tall a$$ building with the NYU flag hanging from it…and its beside duane reade, and whenever you try to enter they ask you for a NYU student ID) is THREE blocks away from BMCC’s Murray Street campus. How do I know this? Simple. I sometimes take the R train at city hall which is directly across from the Woolworth building. I actually walked there today and timed myself. Took me 7 minutes. I probably could have gotten there in less time if I didn’t bump into so many people on NYC’s congested sidewalks.

I believe you are referring to Columbia’s main campus. However, they do have a building that is quite close to Stuyvesant high school, which is quite close to BMCC’s Chambers street campus. It may or may not be a 10 min walk, but it certainly is a walkable distance.

At no point did I say NYU only accepts nursing majors. I simply said that they have an articulation agreement with BMCC’s nursing major.

I posted this before in this thread…but someone from BMCC transferred to Columbia University, and the last time I checked it was an ivy league school.

[Mathematics Department - Math Majors and Alumni](http://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/math/page.jsp?pid=1089&n=Math%20Majors%20and%20Alumni)

Like I said before, Benjamin Mills transferred to Columbia, says so in the link ^.

Well seeing that Harvard took a hiatus from accepting transfer students and only just resumed this year, I’m not sure how many schools would be able to say their graduates transferred to Harvard recently.

Y por último, BMCC does indeed have an honors program! Requirement is 3.2 GPA/12+ Credits/no remedial classes!

“Yeah, that’s what I thought as well. If someone from BMCC made it into Harvard I’m pretty sure they’d publicize this fact more widely on their website”

Well I wouldn’t say Its Impossible… You never know until you try. =] I called up someome the other day at rockland…

Well I seem to be Ignorant on that fact… I thought All of columbia’s Buildings was scattered throughout UPPER MANHATTEN… I know NYU had building everywhere… its crazy…I often hear that is what many people do not want to attend because there is no REAL Campus.

well again I’m not saying its impossible!! … Just way your chances … if thats where you choose (To end up in a IVY league) I think were ever you go Bust ya butt… get into a honer program… Do extra Activities and even play a sport If you can… and I guess you can try.

bacchanal,

Do you attend BMCC?.. that was one of my college choices but I hear its like high school in there…

orangemarmalade,

I spoke to someone with the honers program the other day, You can Tranfer into the program… She gave me a little mini interview (Why I want to join the program, How I heard about it, What are my goals) Stuff like that She Told me If I want to get it I should Do I semester or two there… Show outstanding achievement… she told me the earlier I get into the program the better…

I have a Tour Date set up next week with her… All the students in the program have a mentor… Seems I’m going to have one Before even getting into the program (So she says)… I suppose I just have to hold up my ed of the deal IF I choose to attend SUNY Rockland.

Oh! Tell me how the tour goes. So you have to be sure of what your major in from the beginning since they assign a mentor to you from the start?

Yes, I do attend BMCC (I said so already), and although I finished my high school education outside the United States I did attend a public high school in NYC briefly (worst decision of my life!!). I went to a cut throat competitive high school in my home country, but my high school in NYC… (uuugh!!!).

Yes, BMCC is just like a typical American high school but after reading this thread
(http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/community-colleges/766077-most-annoying-type-cc-student.html</a>) I’m under the impression that it’s a common feature of all community colleges. It comes with the territory I guess :p

While BMCC’s student body largely consists of Pell Grant abusers, “the constantly drunk party animal who is just a dead body in class, hoping for a C” as theviolinist puts it, and the “know-it-all” older person, there are some very intelligent students here who did extremely well in high school (like myself) and could have gone entered directly to a top 4 year college, but end up at BMCC for one reason or another.

But there are benefits of having this kind of student body. One cannot deny the hot spanish girls that will practically sleep with you if you help them pass their remedial math class (I love being a math tutor  )

Also, I’m done arguing over whether Columbia has a building near BMCC. Either it does or the prescription in my glasses need to be rechecked.

With regard to this whole debate about transferring to an Ivy League school, I honestly cannot tell you which community college will give you the best chance of transferring to an Ivy League. I am also interested in transferring to an Ivy League school (I do believe I have the grades, though maybe not the ECs) and the only reason I am at BMCC is because of NYCDOE socialist bureaucracy. I’m not sure why the OP is dead set on transferring to an Ivy League school, but I have actually been considering some institutions comparable to the Ivys but more transfer friendly (thinking of USC right now)…uumm all I can say is choose a community college that best suits your needs and not one that has the highest transfer rate to ivy league schools because that still doesn’t guarantee that you will transfer to an ivy league school.

Most CCs within the CUNY system and in NYC will do what they are supposed to do: properly prepare you to transfer to a 4yr institution. If you are interested in transferring to an Ivy League school the community college you come from will matter less than your level of dedication and intellectual preparation.

You can always contact your Ivy League university of choice and ask them what kind of student they are looking for, whether or not your current school matters that much, etc. You may also check their websites, contact their students, etc. to check how they approach the educational material. I can safely tell you the biggest factor will be $; if you can pay, they will work with you.

Forget the notion that attending a community college prevents you from attending more prestigious institutions. If you are dedicated and responsible, many doors will open for you.

it’s starting to feel as if I’m spamming this part of the CC forum. I am no ■■■■■, please trust me on that. Just really worried and anxious and confused.

Rockland CC, anyone got more info about it or knows anyone who actually went to an “elite” 4 year program from there? How are their honours program? what is the social life/college feel there like?

Large international population/good international support services?

I’m currently a student at BMCC, and was told by a professor that a few students in his class had made it to Brown, Harvard and Cornell. One of the students being admitted to two of those. So, it is quite possible to transfer out to an ivy.
