Community Essay

I’m a senior in high school and I’m beginning to write my community essay for umich but I’m kind of stuck. I want to write about how I’m involved in volunteering because I’m applying to nursing and I know that will be important. My current idea for this essay is to write about how being in the volunteer community has led to self discovery because it has helped me come out of my shell since I was shy before. My concern is that this does not fit the prompt very well, any advice?

I think the first purpose of the essay is a back door to asking about diversity issues BUT if that answer is not going to help you ( because you’re not bringing diversity to campus) I think it’s great to use it to talk about what you DO bring to campus…and "I’m part of the community of volunteers " is a great topic. I’d mention how you plan to continue your volunteering and what specific types of volunteer things you’d like to join or start at UMich. The university needs people who want to volunteer for things.

My daughter ( a nursing student at UMich) did hers on being part of the community of “involved leaders” . She talked about all her extra curriculars ( she had headed an unusually high number in HS) including 2 she founded in HS and what similar things she wanted to do at Michigan

When I wrote about the community that I’m a part of, I think it revolved heavily around art (I was the art kid in high school and participated in competitions involving photography). I’m going for Engineering-- and it’s obvious by the classes that I’ve taken. Make sure your essay is thorough and unique. Any community works.
