community or post grad yr?

Looking to get feedback about peoples experiences . also what would set my son up better for admissions down the line.
my son just turned 17, is a hs senior, without great grades (2.7) . he recently bagged a 1500 on his sats, which surprised all of us. he could be immature, or have an LD. anyway we’re inclined to have him commute to a local cc next yr, but i’m not averse to sending him to prep school for a pg. does anyone know which of these is more preferable when it comes to college admissions?

I am not sure if either are preferable…

I would think about:

Cost - what can you afford? will he take college more seriously than HS?

Would it be better for him? Stay at home with your support or gaining some independence?
Potential colleges. - if he is thinking about your state U then it will be known how the CC courses transfer
Maturity - will he squander any new found freedom? Will he hang with old HS friends, or make new ones at prep school?
LD: Can you get him tested?Which would have better support?

GPA: Would the prep school classes affect his GPA?

I think I would get him tested for LDs and have him go to the Community College.

We decided to send our son to a 4 year school. 2.7ish GPA, 1200ish SAT. He’s pretty much lazy! Sports and socializing were his high school agenda; he only got his grades as high as they needed to be to stay on the team. We talked to a few people, and decided CC would just be an extension of high school and not really be any benefit. He’s only about a month into his freshman year, but seems to be doing great and the few grades he’s gotten back have been great. Does your son have a preference? Our son really wanted to go to a 4 year, so hopefully that motivates him to do what he has to do to stay there.

thx for the feedback. he’d prefer to go to some swanky sounding college (we live in a fairly snobby area).(should have thought about that sooner, right?).he’s a real late bloomer physically (could pass for a middle school student), and i think mentally as well.growing up he always tested 50th percentile ish, which is why his sat’s caught us all off guard.cost-wise, cc is a no brainer , but i dont want to be penny wise and pound foolish. he is also prone to making some mindblowingly bad decisions so at this point im pretty reluctant to send him off to state U. his friends will all be going off somewhere, so its not like he’ll be hanging around the same circle of knuckleheads if he’s local…he’ll find new knuckleheads…
