Community service hours on the application?

Hello,

I’ve seen people list their community service hours in their chance-me threads, and I am just wondering if I’m supposed to list mine under the extracurricular section of the application. I’ve got thousands of hours of community service (just something I’ve done over many years) and I thought I wouldn’t get a chance to write it on my app. Do I get to write it down on my app? And if yes–where should I write the total of community service hours?

Thanks in advance!

You wouldn’t write just the number of hours, list each significant community service activity you did as an activity and state the number of hours there.

@jamesjunkers Yes, I’m aware that I’m supposed to list each activity with a brief explanation and the number of hours spent. I was just wondering if I was expected to write the total number of community service hours, as I’ve seen people include in their chance-me threads that they’ve spent a number of hours volunteering… As far as I understood from your reply, we don’t get to write it down on our apps. Why mention it (“community service hours: # of hours+”) in their chance-me threads if they are never going to actually write it down on their apps? The admissions officers will never know how many hours they spent over the years. This got me confused. Sorry I’m not very coherent here since I’ve spent the whole day reading :stuck_out_tongue: But I hope you get my point.

Do you think it’s a good idea to inform the interviewers of the number of community service hours I’ve earned over the years?

And thanks for replying!

A friend of mine, a judge, interviews for my college. He bemoans the fact of how many students over-emphasize the number – as if it’s some badge of honor. He says: Do students know that I sentence people to community service hours???

If your activity is meaningful, discuss it. The numbers of vol hours per se, is not meaningful to us as interviewers.
