Community service hours?

So I know the general idea is "more the better" (duh).
1. My counselor told me the magic number is 200+; any more after that won't help any.
2. I've heard other places that if you manage over 400 it's an amazing stat and give a huge boost.

Which opinion do you agree with, or what is your opinion?

I think it doesn’t matter how many hours so much as what the hours are of. Colleges just want to see you volunteering doing something worthwhile that you care about, not just collecting hours.

They don’t care about the actual hours (they don’t even ask how many hours you have, at least not explicitly). The only real reason to keep track of hours is for scholarships and such. Community service can be one of your extracurriculars but it doesn’t have to be.

Yeah, it’s more about what you actually do for community service than the hours you get. I don’t know…I find it hard to believe that 400 is viewed as amazing and results in a huge boost. That’s only around 100 per year. At my school, I think around 5 people (out of ~100) already have that many, and around 10 more have >300 and we’re only sophomores.
