Community service in admissions

Just curious as to something regarding admissions and community service.

I work full time during the summer (40 hours.. occasionally a few extra a week; I'm a lifeguard) and combined with other activities/vacation that leaves me with no time to really commit myself to any community service. My parents don't really want me to work or anything during the school year because they don't want me to overexert myself (Swimming + Jazz Ensemble + Other ECs that I do independently at home take up time that I'm not doing homework)

Basically, will schools respect the fact that I work 40 hours a week? I'm not "poor" but my dad's startup business got cluster****** (pardon my french lol) by the economy and he's in no position to pay my way through college.

Ya think of community service as a job of club, it’s just something that people are involved with. You will be fine, but some service doesn’t hurt.

i would definitely try to fit some in.

i was talking to an admissions counselor at campus day and she said something like 98% of applicants have some type of service towards their community.

she used it as almost a bragging point that everyone had done service.

then again, you have a lot of other stuff so you might be ok.

if i were you, i would try to sign up for a habitat for humanity for a day or do something simple.

good luck!
