In a post on another college's board, a parent lamented the fact that his/her son was unable to participate in off-campus community service opportunities and school year internships because none of those opportunities was within walking distance of the campus (and the town had no public transit).

Would this be a problem at Hobart? Is there significant participation in off-campus service programming or school year internships in Geneva? Are off-campus service and internship opportunities accessible without wheel?

Downtown is very walkable from campus. I can’t say I have many details, but I know that there are a large number of community service opportunities off-campus. I believe there’s a literacy program for fourth(?)-graders and I think my son is participating in a Habitat for Humanity project; obviously both would have to be off-campus. I would think if transportation would be needed, the school would provide it at the particular times the volunteering is supposed to happen. The president Mark Gearan is so determined to have community service be such an integral part of the college experience, he would turn handsprings to make it happen. HWS has one of the highest participation rates of LACs for community service!

For school year internships, I’m not as aware of full-fledged programs, but that doesn’t mean that students don’t have internships. I do know that if you are interested in having an internship, you can get course credit, although I think this may be only for one semester. I remember thinking when I read that information that my son, who’s considering law school, could have a very valuable experience of working in a law office for a semester.

Have you looked at the HWS website where they have all the pictures each week? They often show students participating in community service or maybe even internships. If you have further questions, you could call the appropriate administrative departments. I’m sure they could give you plenty of information.

While this internship happened during the summer, I thought it’s somewhat relevant to post nonetheless:

Here’s some info from the HWS website about one community service program. In one of the HWS photos of the week, accompanying the photo is the following caption: “As part of her work with America Reads, Elizabeth Marder '12 explores a book with Iyania, a student at West Street School. More than 90 HWS student-tutors work with children at five area schools and at one afterschool program each semester.”
