Community service relevance

I'm interested in becoming a doctor (specifically, a neurologist) when I'm older. This year, I decided I would get my NHS hours at the hospital 2 minutes away from my house. Stupid me decided to wait until the first day of summer to apply for a volunteer position. >.< Guess what? Filled. After trying numerous hospitals in my area, none of them have open spots for high schoolers. I'm going to try to branch out a bit- will this hurt my chances of getting into top schools? I'm thinking of helping out at assisted living programs for the disabled, special needs mentoring programs, etc. These actually interest me a lot more than the clerical work I would be doing at the hospital.

So, is this a bad thing? Was your community service related to your intended major?

Yes, it was a bit dumb of you to wait until the first day of summer. But yeah, working in a hospital in a clerical position honestly might not help you all that much, unless you get to really communicate with the doctors/neurologists or something. Maybe you’d want to try an elderly home; there are probably patients there with Alzheimer’s or some other form of neurological disorder. Or you could help children with genetic disorders, maybe help kids with autism or Down syndrome.
