community service scholarship award

Does any one know how the CSS (worth up to $15,000 a year ) is awarded. My son learned today that he was one of 30 receiving this award and was given $5,000 a year for four years. Previously, he had been awarded a $20,000 scholarship. Would this be why he did not get more that the $5,000? THanks for any thoughts.

Is there anyone out there in who has never received a letter, one way or the other, on either the DHS or the Comm Serv scholarships? I called about a week after the DHS notifications went out and was told that "all those sent out were received" so our son did not get one. They also said that he did not get a letter because his materials were with the Comm Serv scholarship committee. Now I hear that the Comm Serv notifications probably went out, and still we have never gotten a yes or no from anyone! Anyone else in this situation? It is very frustrating! Makes you wonder if they even had his applications at all.

I also haven't received any information (acceptance or rejection) about either the dean's honor or community service scholarship. I have called Tulane multiple times the past couple months, and the admissions office kept telling me that I would hear in the mail the within the week. After two months of no information, I called again and asked for the number of the person handling the scholarships. After explaining that my family has a high amount of financial debt and that I need to know how much money I will be receiving so I can start looking at loans, the office finally told me I didn't receive either scholarship. They claim they sent out both rejection letters over a month ago, and they have no idea why I didn't receive them. I'm disappointed I didn't know sooner, all the stress and anticipation was for nothing. It also makes me wonder how many other letters from Tulane have been lost in the mail...

Do they even send out NO notifications for the CSS? We haven't heard one way or another. We'll be visiting there next week, so I guess we'll find out the good or bad news then. My D also got accepted next door to Loyola wit a lot more scholarship money. What do you think? Are the differences between the schools that start or should you go with the money?

Personally, I think the differences are that stark. Tulane students have much better average stats, which really does translate in aggregate to a much brighter group. Supporting stats on that are Loyola average ACT about 25, Tulane 31; SAT: Loyola 1190, Tulane 1365 and this year's class will be about 1400 most likely. Those are big gaps. Tulane offers a much broader array of courses and options, has a lot of grad students in various areas which means a lot of research going on and help for the undergrads, yet almost all courses, even the intro courses, are taught by the regular faculty. Tulane has much higher name recognition outside of New Orleans. In the rest of the country they assume you mean Chicago or Maryland or California when you say Loyola depending on where you say it, although that is minor compared to the other reasons I give.

I don't mean to denigrate Loyola in any way, those are just facts. One of my best friends from my first career job graduated from Loyola NO and went on to get a PhD in biochemistry, and has been very successful. But that is just a one person anecdote. In general, I think you have to go with the higher quality place when there is a significant difference in that quality, unless the money is an issue of such magnitude that it overwhelms all other reasons. I am assuming by the fact that you asked that this is not the case.

Tulane has a policy of not sending out rejection letters for scholarships; if you get a letter, its because you won the scholarship. Regarding if the amount for the CSS is limited if you already got a scholarship from Tulane, this is false: I received both the 20k scholarship upon admittance back in December as well as the 15k CSS scholarship.

Dumb Question but,: What must you do to recieve this award?

Here is the link, gives a full description:

[Tulane Community Service Scholarship](http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/idxcommunityservicescholarship.htm)

Tulane should rethink its policy regarding lack of notification to accepted students on their scholarships. These applications take considerable time and effort to assemble, and in the case of the CSS, the applicant is proposing activities that could also provide direct or indirect benefit to Tulane’s Center for Public Service. I think a simple “no” notification, even if by e-mail, would be appropriate and would close the loop rather than leaving students hanging in the air and wondering.

Actually, my D did receive a notification a week or so ago that she did not get the scholarship. I’m not sure if that is general policy. She had just returned from visiting the school with my wife and had spoken to the financial aid office. It was disappointing, but she has received scholarship money and has narrowed her choices. It’s getting to be crunch time though. Personally, I’m still nervous about the overall school size and the individual class size. I’m hoping she can still have that personal connection you can get with professors when you are in smaller schools.

NYMIZ - In my experience (which is considerable with Tulane) there is generally an excellent connection between profs and students. Of course a few of the intro classes can get a little large (never huge), and not every single prof is like this (also true even at LAC’s), but once she is through those intro classes she should find the profs very receptive. A number of them go to the Rat and hang with the students, etc. Even in freshman year, depending on the class, she can connect pretty well with the profs, especially if she makes the effort to see them. I’m not saying it is Reed or Williams or Middlebury or Amherst in this regard, but for a medium size research university the faculty are quite accessable.

Last year my son received notification that he did not receive either the DHS or th Community Service Scholarship. However, I’m not sure if they’ve changed their policies.
